They would seem to be a good idea for situations where vibrations would be transmitted to a non-rigid mount, setting the surface into motion. For example, a table, workstation desk shelf, joist-mounted flooring, etc. All of these surfaces are secondary sources of sound as a result of the speakers sitting on them, creating a mechanical vibrating system.
Think of three similar examples outside the audio systems field: A piano, a car, and an air conditioning compressor unit.
In the case of the piano, we WANT to transfer the relatively small vibration generated by the hammer hitting the wire strings to the soundboard, in an effort to INCREASE the audible output. So, we want that coupling. In the case of the car, we DON'T WANT engine vibrations being transmitted throughout the vehicle. So, we use vibration-absorbing engine mounts to LIMIT the amount of vibrational energy sent throughout the vehicle. The same is true for air conditioning units, particularly those used in commercial construction such as office buildings or concert halls.
So, the basic concept of the speaker stands is well-established and "sound" science. In fact, noise and vibration control is well-understood, and has been for quite a long time (read Beranek, Olson, Knudson & Harris, and many other more recent texts and papers).
I saw, in the referenced site, a table showing numerous models of speakers and the recommended stands for them. This is a good sign that these people are serious about what they're doing. Obviously, three of the main issues are the weight of the speaker, the main resonances of the speaker cabinet, and the resonances of the surface/structure of where they're placed. So, while these products won't eliminate all unwanted vibrations in all combinations, it's quite likely that, as a non-custom solution, they are likely to help noticeably, and at a reasonable, non-custom solution, cost.
