....I use a Technics SL1210mk2 with a KAB arm damper and Goldring 1012GX cart into a Goldring PA1 phonostage, even on my Dads system at his house ( much more expensive and much better than my system ) it sounds great and it's fool proof, love it...

I've got a 1210 with an AT440. I've not done any mods yet such as the kab dampner. I intend to, just haven't yet. The only A/B I've been able to do is with my NAIM CD3 which aint bad. The $480 out of the box TT/cart set up is at least as good, probably better than the $2K NAIM. For whatever its worth.
You cannot beat an SL-12XX with fluid damper, a good cart (I'd go DL-103) and a good phono preamp (Jolida JD-9a). Total cost: $1,175-1,250, depending on the model of SL-12xx chosen.
