In Reply to: Looks like I'm going to try the EH 6SN7s in my Metis sooner rather than later. posted by HenryH on August 9, 2006 at 10:59:13:
My Dehavilland preamp uses the 6SN7 tube.
I've tried everything from EH to top of the line Sylvania 6SN7W metal base and Tung-Sol black plates. The EH tubes are by far the worst sounding in my system.
They are very hard, sterile, bright sounding tube.If you don't want to pay the big bucks for the Syl 6SN7W or TS black plates try some RCA smoke glass 6SN7’s.
The RCA's are very smooth but a tad rolled off and are available at a reasonable cost.
Follow Ups:
Certainly not bright or sterile. If anything they are a bit on the warm side of neutral, just like I like it. I've got the OC9ML/II on the Scout listening to Brahms First Symphony with Solti/CSO on London. Very enjoyable so far. But I'll reserve judgement for a couple of weeks to allow the new tubes to burn in.

I too found the EH 6SN7 a bit to the warm whereas the Chinese valves were etched with a touch of brightness in the upper mids. The EH are not exactly the 6SN7 poster child, but they have no grevious flaws. I'll echo MintVinyl's suggestion to try the RCA 6SN7GT carbonized glass from the 40's. Used in the $20-$30 range, NOS around $50. If your preamp or amp is neutral to begin with, the RCA tonality has a rightness I find compelling. The page below was helpful for me.

If you where to try the other two tubes I mentioned you would then hear the difference I'm speaking of.
As one of the other posters mentioned if you never heard the good stuff the EH 6SN7's sound OK.I have found a much lower priced tube that sounds very nice .
It's a Sylvania 6SN7WGT, red base with green lettering.
Their usually available for around $50-$60 each and will yield 90% plus of what the $225. Syl 6SN7W will do.
