In Reply to: What does "Vintage audio specific for DL 103" mean? Why is it "good"? (nt) posted by Garth on August 7, 2006 at 11:41:47:
The Brand is Vintage Audio and there are no different set ups for low, medium or high output MC.It was built to work for a DL 103.
The 2 trans inside were made by a famous french builder that died 5 years ago. His name was Mr Chrétien and his trans are highly estimated and sought after.
Follow Ups:
other's have tried to translate his work but the gist of his design can only be experienced first hand.
i have found this on ebay but it does not transalte to what the poster says. The add says: "They were made in the 1950'/60's
Manfactured by :
Central Transformer Co. In the USA
Made for the Bell & Howell Company in Chicago Ill. They were used in the audio system of there 16mm Sound Motion Picture Reocord and Playback Audio Amplifiers"
I am not seeing anything relative to Vintage or Chrétien other than "The Holy Grail".

Vintage audio is a young and little french company that builds amps, phono preamps and a TT called "la matière".
It is based in the south of France in Montpellier.

Do they have email?
Hi,That seems similar to La Maison de l'Audiophile (custom transformers *pacific audio* and WE91 type triode amps and Kaneda SS amps, etc.) A shop that was a bridge to the Japanese diy audio-> European connection via Jean Hiraga who's incidentally half French, half Japanese. I may be wrong, but I think he was the one who originally touted the virtues of the DL103 very early on before it even became a well known sleeper by Joelist-ers (Sound Practices) in the west by the late 90's. Of course these days it is very well known.
Fred,
You are right.
The Boss of Vintage audio is a man called Paulo Marcello.
He worked for many years with Jean Hiraga and I think he was one of the partners of "la maison de l'audiophile" and quit last year or two years ago to start on is own "Vintage Audio".
He is still in contact with Jean Hiraga who is the french(half Japanese) gourou of audio. (even more for analog addicts).
I don't know in what company worked Mr Chrétien who was building the trans used in Vintage Audio transformers but I am sure that he was in relation with Mr Hiraga.
I am going to get informations and will give you the web site.
I saw him yesterday and he told me that he was going on vacations till the 21st.
cheers,
