I had a 10X4 and 20XL before the Blackbird. Both were pretty good.

Follow Ups:
I'm running the 20xl, but have wondered about the Blackbird and the 501. The bird would allow me to remove the tranny which may be a plus. I don't know. The 501 has many proponents though. Some, I believe, preferred it to the bird. It probably comes down to system synergy.BTW, Where can one buy a cheap stethoscope. I've got the sandbox built and in place. But I'd love to have some way to measure or compare it. It is better than the raw shelf. had to take the subwoofer down about 6hz and bass tightened up very nicely. better detail too.

It has been too long since I switched from the 20XL to the Blackbird for me to describe the differences accurately. I don't possess the memory of a reviewer.I (think) I remember the Blackbird recovering a little more detail, nailing the harmonics a little better and sounding a bit more relaxed. The 20XL sounded a little warmer as I recall. The Blackbird strikes my as being fairly nuetral. I thought the trade off was well worth it in my system. If a system was borderline in the warmth department, the 20XL might win.

I borrowed my son's stethoscope, but they are relatively easy to buy.You can't really measure anything with a steoscope. What you can do very effectively is hear the motor vibrations. You won't be able to know the frequency of the vibrations and whether or not they are harmful to playback. My experiments aimed at diminishing vibration as much as I could as in no vibration is a good vibration.

Geez. I feel somewhat silly. I didn't do a search and just figured that a stethoscope must cost lots of $$. Thanks for the link. I realize that they don't do measurements perse', but like you, I wanted to see if the vibration was completely gone.

I bought a "brand new, in sealed box" Dynavector 20XH on Audiogon. What I received was some unidentifiable cartridge that looked to worth maybe $50 in an opened Dynavector box. It has been shipped back to it's seller. He, uh, is still holding my money until his POS gets back to him. I could go on but whats the point. Worst Audiogon transaction I've had out of hundreds. I just hope I'm able to get my money back without having to drive a few states away!
