In Reply to: Interesting article. Here's an interesting quote that no one ever speaks about here. The cost of DIY posted by artemus on July 19, 2006 at 12:17:44:
I don't disagree with your conclusion, as it is the conclusion that you find and it's yours. For me, spending the time that I spent getting my Russco going was pure discovery and pleasure. The time spent (40 hrs total?) was so enjoyable that I'm thinking about doing another idler. So this coin can be turned over and one might wonder what a similar amount of fun would have cost if I spent several days at Disney World instead; I guess you can get my drift. After a Disney trip with my family I'm exhausted and elated and have great memories, and tons of photos to document the memories. Vs. the Russco which is going to provide me with many years of musical fun. Both have great value for me, and I just can't think of my Russco restoration time as work.

PS--OT but one of my home restoration projects was restoring 20 interior doors in our (vintage) house a couple of years ago, and each one took over 10 hours of labor to do. Easily about 200 hours of work. While doing this project I sometimes wondered if the value of my time should be calculated as that of somone who does this for a living, or if the value of my time should be calculated based on what my employer pays me. I couldn't find the answer, but the doors look great!

and we count our time on them and expect to get paid. My point is that everything has a cost, including DIY

Costing your labour is only relevent if you would have spent the time earning money. If you would have been watching TV, playing with the kids, listening to music etc then whilst there's a value to these activities they don't actually earn you money.

Time is money is a commonly used frase - and it simply isnīt true. The time I spend playing with my children or making love to my wife canīt be mesured in cool cash. The time I spend looking at a beatiful tree outside my window canīt be mesured in money. And the time I spend here or spend on tuning my tt canīt be mesured in money. The reason I get payed at work is that someone else is willing to pay me for whatever iīm doing. And the money I earn I will end up paying a lot of other people.
