Hi, hope you can help me decide which of these turntables is worth reconditioning.
Onkyo CP-554
Technics SL-B202Both seem to work OK, but need new stylus's.
Which one do you think is the better turntable?Very much looking forward to your advice.
Follow Ups:
If you already own them both, why not keep them both and just replace the stylus on one of them now?
I'm not totally sure about the Onkyo, but doesn't it use a P-mount cartridge? These types of tables are extremely easy to set up, but your choice of cartridges is limited by the need for the P-mount design.
You'll have to get more involved to get the Technics set up, but you'll have a much wider range of cartidge choices.
Me, I would go with the Technics.

Go with the Technics. It's much easier to get parts for and their build quality tends to be better than Onkyo's. You'll need to decide if your current cartridge is worth getting a new stylus for or if you'd get better bang for your buck with a cartridge upgrade.
OK, many thanks, I do own both, in Australia, what cartidge would you recommend?
How much will it cost approx?
You can probably start with the Audio Technica AT-95. It sells here in the States for about $40 from Garage-A-Records. Garage-A has a good website, but I don't know that they ship to Australia.
Other carts to consider are the Audio Technica AT-120 and Shure M97xe. Garage-A sell the AT for about $60, and Amazon has the Shure for about the same price.
Then there's the Denon DL-103 at about $150 from William Thakker on Ebay, but you'll also need to build or buy a step-up transformer to use it with a standard moving magnet phono input.
There are a lot of carts to look at. Garage-A has a good selection, so does the Needle Doctor.
HenryH is a regular here and he really likes the AT-120.

Sorry, what is a low cost, resonable sylus for these?
I assume you mean cartridge instead of stylus. This is a list of good choices under $100:Ortofon OM 10 Super
Ortofon 510MkII
Audio Technica 440ML
Shure M97XEYou can check out these at the budget cartridge section at NeedleDoctor.com.
Thanks Bry, quick advice, nice one!
Will look into these here in Oz.
You'll get a lot of different opinions here, but my pick of those is probably the Ortofon 510MkII. I currently use the upgraded version, the 540MkII, and I love it. The only difference is the stylus, so you can always upgrade a 510 to a 520, 530 or 540 at a later date. The same is true of the Ortofon Super OM carts.
