I'll let you have this Lenco that I'm working on for one-third the price of the Garrard 501. It's a Lenco 501...Yeah, that's the ticket...a 501...PayPal $5000 + 3%...I'll cover shipping. ;)The Garrard 501 is very nice, but I'm not sure it is that nice!

Hey Mosin,With my two 301's currently snuffling & mooing in their stalls for me to make ONE of them functional , f'chrissake, it may be an understatement for me to say I don't think I'm in the market for any of the items mentioned....
But, until I read the above link carefully and had a look at the other pix of the internals of the 501, I guess I can say I was a bit leery of the whole enterprise. In the Nineties, the Loricraft buy-out of the Garrard name, parts and machinery promised not much other than the standard audio-drama where a once-legit name gets bought at a low period and then, well, sucked dry for every last ounce of credibility.
Even having seeing the 501 at an audio show isn't very convincing. Somehow or other, they've managed to style the thing in a way that takes boring and bland to a whole new dimension. The style isn't British Reserve, it's mild-mannered meets watered-down in a plain brown envelope. But maybe it's a Clark Kent kinda thing.
Have a look at the machining and industrial design in the German pdf link below.... Underneath the hood this thing appears to be a killer. I had no idea.
Wonder if a 501 goes into a Shindo plinth. Now that would be something.

Hi JDi think i posted on the difference in sound between 501& 301 (both
in loricraft plintths) some time ago but here is my summbary again... compared to the 501, the 301 shows a kind of rich dark rubbery majesty in addition to rolled off highs. the 501 is flatter, cleaner, more neutral, more transparent and considerably more extended top to bottom. it is much quieter. and it has a more powerful motor. my guess is that the 501 could be improved by bit-by-bit by material-choice tweaking (platter, bearing, plinth, etc). but its design & execution is quite remarkable as is. as-is, i think the 501 would behard to beat ( i have not heard the 501 against the great belt-drives of today but i gut feeling tells me that i would pick the 501 over any of them).

As I mentioned to mosin I had been working with my 301s pretty intensively when I saw this set of under-the-hood photos.
Kind of a neck-snap back-to-the-future moment to leave 1956 and glance over at 2006...........Your comparison is intriguing, and yeah, I'll bet you could contour the sound a touch with simple plinth, plattermat, arm/cart etc choices.
Until Loricraft introduces a 'ding & dent shop' there's no reason for me to continue torturing myself, though.
And with a starting pricetag of €15K, there would have to have quite a few dings inflicted before I'd even be in the neighborhood.Okay, back to the fifties...
Also,i forgot to mention that 501 long-term speed stability is significantly greater than on 301/401. i checked my 501 speed after 3 months & it had not deviated at all. my 401/301 units in contrast need to be mildly tweaked every 2 weeks or so.
my ear tells me that speed stability while playing records is better on the 501.
but otherwize, it looks really cool. A souped up 301. Neat.

Yeah, kind of interesting to see what they radically redesigned (deck itself, top-plate is now just a solid ring with the six under-plinth fittings)----- and what they pretty much left the same (idler, to some extent, and motor positioning / suspension arrangement). However there's not doubt that the motor + controller is new, and there is of course no 'stepped pulley & linkage' system to up-clutch to the different speeds. Guess controller handles that.
Wish there was more info avail on this thing or that Loricraft was a bit more forthcoming. Somehow the 'well-kept secret' in Audio tends to move on to oblivion fairly quickly ...
It is a total re-think. That's for certain. Still, they want a lot of money for it!I found the motor mount springs to be particularly interesting.
