I was reading a review form an old magazine testing out an Jade ... and in the comments about how Sugano suggested that they be set up, it was stated that he did not agree with any sort of side thrust. Is this right and if so does it apply across the range of current Koetsu.
Just that I do spend alot of time with my friends Rosewood (?) so would be nice if it was working to its full potential for when I am there.
Cheers,
Follow Ups:
I remember that the Koetsu tonearm did not have anti-skate.
I don't think that I have ever seen one of those. Might have to do a search on Google.Cheers,
It's rather an issue of stylus profile/drag. For example, my very-heavy Ortofon MC 3000II requires lots of compensation. If your cantilever is straight during play, you're probably good. Otherwise, adjust anti-skate, apropos.
Hi-Fi News and Record Review test LP can be helpful.
Now that you mention cantilevers.. Sugano did suggest that the cantilevers were designed not to require side thrust. Think I had better dig out the review and have another read. It was quite an old review so I just wondered if it were still the current thinking in their design. I think that I will have a good close look when we spin the beast up again at the weekend.Cheers,
The idea is to compensate for the greater or lesser tendency of the cartridge to pull itself toward the spindle when said cartridge is mounted on a standard pivoted arm. Also, typically, the finer and longer the line of stylus contact on the groove wall, the greater the un-compensated inward thrust. An un-wavering cantilever would neither eliminate nor correct inward thrust, even though an out-of-alignment cantilever can denote unequal thrust.
Perhaps - just perhaps - your Koetsu has a soft-radius, limited-contact, low-drag stylus, which might then get by with little compensation, or distortion might even be ignorable with no compensation.
A surprising number of cartridge and tonearm manufacturers supply woeful set-up information with their products.
If you manage to find the article maybe you could post it / part of it / here. It would be interesting info to have...
It wasn't so long ago that I read it so it must be near the top of one of the piles... just which one.Cheers,
Something to remember is that higher physical-weight cartridges require less in the way of bias / antiskate force. The Koetsu cartridges made of onyx and jade are, I think I remember, quite heavy at upwards of 13 gr or so.
In a heavy arm, such a cartridge wouldn't necessarily require antiskate force...The Rosewoods, however, are nowhere near as heavy and, of course, manufacturer's guidelines should be followed in regard to settings.
Think I'd stick with at least minimum antiskate per cartridge info....
Your right about the Jade and the others hewn out of rock... they do tip the scales at alot of grammes. The unfortunate thing about the manufactures guidelines is that the Rosewood comes in an empty box and not many people I know actually knows too much about them. But I suppose that its not going to hurt to experiment.
Cheers,
