Chris,As your a bit cash light at the moment, look at the Allen Wright PP1C. If you have the tubes and some suitable iron, it might just take you some time and a small cost in passives to make an excellent amp. Mine was fired up first time last might, just tacked together as the custom chassis' aren't finished, but I just wanted to finally hear it. With old production 6H23 and gold label Svet el34's, it's bloody excellent. Jaw droppingly good. With the wiring tidied and the chassis made, selected NOS front end tubes, bias fully dialled and a lot of other details they're going to be even better. More details at the end of next week when I've tidied them up and listened some more.

I also don't agree you only need a couple of watts. A decent sized tube amp will grab a set of HE speakers by the throat and control them better than the smaller amps IME. Í'm now using 12W on 104dB horns. But it depends what you like.

FWIW: I have recently finished building a Wright PP-1C clone - well a couple changes. One was that I used Dynaco OPTs from a couple of Mark III's, and I used PTs from old Fisher 500C receivers. Otherwise, it is as designed by Allen. I have to say, this is an outstanding amp. I've tried it with Amprex BB EL34's, Sovtek KT88's and GE 6550's -- all sound just beautiful. Everyone I have had listen to this prefer it over my previous creation - a SE 300B amp. The SE amp won over it's predicessors by virtue of a CCS in the plate circuit of the driver tube. I think this CCS thing is the way to go. It opens up the amp in wonderful ways, and Allen's design is no exception. BTW, I'm using it with 3Pi Termionic speakers (98db?).

Many thanks! This was a great help; I've long felt that the phase splitter was the achilles heel of all the amps I've owned... I once heard an SE EL84/6BQ5 amp from a Magnavox console and despite having a rather crude sonic presentation, it had a neck-snapping quickness and grain-free mids. To say I'm having a cash-flow problem at the moment would be the understatement of the year... I like to research new ideas well before I commit anyway, and, let's face it, if I can dream a pleasant little dream about future audio projects it makes my rather frustrating current state more tolerable. I have a pair of 1962 GEC KT77s that would sound great in an SE design; I suppose I could always tie the screens to the plate, and eventually move to a 45 or 845/211 or 300B unit if my sickness progresses... and the god of $ smiles on me! Many thanks for the site you listed; window shopping is still free.... Thanks again, Chris

I agree about phase splitters. My system will soon be diff from cart to speakers.Whilst you're researching, also look at Lynn Olson's Library. Lots to think about in there, especially the Amity/Aurora article. Between Allen and Lynn's work, you might not have to forsake PP after all.
