Seam on the top=Japanese.
However, if they test good and paid $51 for the pair,
that's not a bad deal. The Japanese made a pretty good 5AR4.IMA, the guy states "Satisfaction or refund" so it doesn't
sound like you "got burned" if you're not happy.

Yes they have the seam on top! I had a feeling they might be the Japanese Matsushita made with the old Mullard tooling. Now I need to test but my newly aquired Hickok 539A does not have a setting for 5AR4 or GZ34 setting on the roll chart. Can any one help out here? Thanks for the info.
Ned, am I right that Matsushita made these with Mullard tooling?I have one branded Dynaco, it has worked sweetly for many years...

Ned, am I right that Matsushita made these with Mullard tooling? Not possible, as they were being made in both places at the same.
However, until GE & Sylvania started making 5AR4 in the USA,
all 5AR4 were made under Philips NV license and design (and Philips
owned Mullard, BTW). Even the Japanese ones should have
the tiny little codes that are usually put on tubes made
under Philips license.
You can find those here:
http://www.triodeel.com/tubedata.htmIMA, there were other Japanese tubes...including EL34's...imported
and sold in the US branded as if they were British made.
The EL34's can be identified the same way as the 5AR4's,
they have a seam on the top.
