In Reply to: What's latest on current 45 tubes? posted by Jon L on March 06, 2002 at 12:58:02:
I'd think you're cutting it pretty close. I'm running a 30's RCA 45 in a Fi 2a3. The speaker is the Horn, a single driver 95dbw (with Fostex Fe108, so no crossover) and a rel sub. With the 45, I'm just about there powerwise with jazz quartets, chamber, and moodier rock( ie, radiohead). I am not running a pre right now which may be limiting me also as Robert mentions below.Tonally, I think the 45 kills the Sovtek 2a3, more liquid a bit fuller and as said below, "psychedelic", but I haven't tried any of the NoS 2a3's (yet). You may ending up wanting for more speaker eff. - So, what else is new?
I've only had these tubes a couple of days so these are very early impressions.

Follow Ups:
Well, at least I hope it's enough. As I said, I will be actively biamping with the 45 on top, above 140 Hz at 18db slope. With the bass out of the equation, I do think it'll go louder than with The Horn.
ah yes, missed the biamp. With the VAC 30/30 still on the bass? Sounds like it will be amazing.
Ahh the VAC, that's my dilemma. I used to run bass with Spectron Digital One, which is now gone. I tried the VAC on the bass and lo and behold, the Spectron is better :)I plan to get a 45 amp for top, but then I have to choose between sellilng the VAC (I don't want to) and getting a SS amp for bass, or using VAC for bass (what a waste also!) Perhaps the 1952 Sylvania 6SN7GT tubes on the way can help...
