I just bought an AMC CVT2030 Tube amplifier. This is the first tube amplifier I have ever gotten, and it comes with two pairs of EL34 tubes. Should I keep these tubes until they need replacing, or should I change my tubes out to another pair? Also, I have my stereo playing music for about two hours everynight. I have no problem turning the amplifier on to let it warm up prior, but I want to preserve the tube life as long as possible. Should I leave the amplifier on all the time, or just turn it on a few minutes before I start listening to music?
Thanks,
Abraham

Watch out though, some "EL34s" are not true pentodes. Triode Electronics appears to level with you on this. Not everybody will.Hasta...
Yes, EL34 are good, and there are several different brands of EL34 being made now so you will have some choices, and they are pretty inexpensive too. My personal favorite, in my gear, is the JJ E34L.However, you will have few choices as to what type of tube you can use. Some EL34 amps can use only EL34, that is without turning them upside down and doing some soldering surgery, etc. This requiring more than casual aquaintence with electronic components and this particular circuit.
Some amps have greater flexibility, mine being an example. I can use KT88/6550 and EL34. The EL34 is just a nicer tube for me in this gear. Don't feel that yours is a bad amp if you can't use anything else. It may simply be optimized, and that ain't bad.
Turn off the amp. Do not leave it on.
Thank you for telling me about the tubes. Are you saying that EL34 is a style, or basic design of tubes, and their are several companies that will make this type, in possibly varying quality, and cost, that I can choose from when I need to replace tubes?Abraham
Abraham,They run from $40/quad of Sovtek EL34WXT, $50 per quad of JJ E34L or Ei EL34, to about $75 for a quad of Svetlanan EL34.
All the way to perhaps $2000+ for a quad of NOS matched Mullard (xf1) big brown micanol base gems. These are my favorite.
So you've got quite a range, depending on the tone you are after and how deep your pockets are.
Yeah, Steven. I need 12 of those matched Mullards, plus a spare or two. Man I'm jealous I'm digging the Svets right now. Will be trying the JJE34L's soon. Thanks for the pic -- a tube man's wet dream.
