He at least thinks it is a 5692. I have never heard of the 5693. Is it a 6SN7 replacement also?
No, a 5693 is NOT a substitute for a 6SN7. It looks sort of like a 5692, but is all red metal.

There are 4 members of the "RCA Red" series:5690: Rarely seen, Dual Rectifier, unique pinout.
5691: 6SL7 type
5692: 6SN7 type
5693: 6SJ7 metal type
Gary,Thanks for the informative post. Are the RCA Red to be sought after for their sonics?
Norm
Actually, I think the red 5691s and 5692s are grossly overrated.
I tried them, and can't stand them. They tend to be rolled off, thick and slow sounding. IMO, they are the worst of the 5691s and 5692s.
YMMV

I certainly agree about the glass, red bottom RCA 5692s, but I have not even seen the all metal tubes.
The Red Series was designed for reliability. I've tried 5691 and 5692 in various circuits and have gone back to more "generic" versions of 6SN7/6SL7. They do look cool however. If I get some time, I'll take some pic's of the full red series and post them shortly on the website.
