They look the same internally. So do RCA 12AU7s and 12AX7s. So do RFT 12AT7s and 12AX7s. So do the late production JAN Philips 6B4G and the JAN Philips 6AV5. So do the Telefunken ECC82 and ECC83. So do many many others, including many 6SN7 family tubes - some are highly regarded and some are not even though they look identical. There's far too many to list.Is the grid wound the same way, with the same materials and the same diameter wire? Is the cathode coating the same? Is the internal vacuum of the two tubes identical? A lot of internal construction can be quite different and not be obvious to the eye.
A LOT of tubes (including many highly regarded NOS tubes) look exactly alike and are completely different. Don't just look at a tube's internals and try to judge it. It's not conclusive by any means.

Jim, do you mean that the RFT 12ax7 has the small plates that resemble 12at7 style plates? I have a pair of RFT 12au7 with the small 12at7 plates that I haven't used b/c I thought they were mislabeled at the factory. Thanks...

Yes. RFT 12**7 all use the same plate, the one that looks like a 12AT7 plate. So your 12AU7s are fine, and I think they are a very nice tube. Use them and enjoy!

Hey Jim, thanks for the reply. Appreciate your involvements in these forums.

And others think the EH 6SN7 is "a very good copy of the Sylvania VT231".I agree with you Jim that "fast, energetic, clear" and I would add extended are characteristics of these new production efforts and that many appear to be seeking other sonic qualities from their tube based systems.
