I have AES AE-3 DJH preamp that is humming. I replaced the two 6SN7's and still have hum.I am looking to replace the single rectifier tube. It is listed as a 6V4/6CA4. Are these two different tube options?
I see 6V4/EZ80, 6CA4/EC90/6135, and 6V4WA's on line. Are these all the same tubes. Are any of these varieties usable, and how do the different tubes alter the sound?
Follow Ups:
Ther are lots of 6CA4 available. But the stock ones are super. Leave 'em.
The gain is pretty much milktoast on that pre-amp. Similar to other pre-amps we sell. Input sensitivity on amps vary more. I have used that pre-amp with Avantgarde Duos which are 103dB effecient. So quiet. If you bought that AE-3 DJH from us please call me personally at 909-931-9686 so we can make sure you are soooo happy. AE/Cary of course will take care of you.
It will kick the snot out of most $5k pre-amps. I have bench tested it and it is so quiet. Freq response is flatter than an accountants butt. Even when we measured it into an 11k ohm input impedence!!!!
The bass is dynamic.
When I first purchased it a few years back it introduced a buzz into my otherwise silent system (volume at zero, ears within a yard or so of the speakers, audible buzz). Swapping tubes wouldn't fix it. I thought it might be a ground loop or something, so I tried cheater plugs etc. I swapped interconnects around, unplugged-replugged everything...just to be sure. Finally, I called Cary and returned the unit for a look-see (they were VERY nice). It went, it came back...buzz still there. I called them back, was told by their rep "it's a 'sound design'", and was asked to send to them again (I think at their expense, I don't quite recall).ANYWAY, when it came back the second time it was absolutely SILENT. Whatever they did, it fixed it permanently. I love this unit (the Volume Attenuator is like liquid gold). I haven't had to replace the rectifier tube yet though. I guess this is my way of saying, based on my experience, that you shouldn't worry (whatever the cause of the hum). It'll get right in the end. The Cary folks are great.

Out of curiosity, what amp are you matching with your DJH preamp? I have had problems with it having too much gain with my last amp. I could only turm the volume up to the 9:00 position and it was very very loud. I want to really make this preamp work for me as the sound is better than anything I have heard to date.

I think the reason the DJH preamp has so much gain is that it is often used with Cary amps, which typically have low voltage gain, at least the AES DJH Superamp I had. In fact, my preamp didn't have enough gain using the DJH amps with the moving coil cartridge I had so I had to buy an outboard phono stage with 66db gain. I have a solid state amp and some OTL amps that have 25-30 db gain, so I have to reduce the phono stage gain when using them. Can you change the gain of the preamp?

I have a Bryston 3B-ST. Like you, I only get the volume knob up to around 9:00 -- 9:30 TOPS with the lowest level recordings that I have. I have no problem with that. Honestly, I don't think that there is anything wrong with that.

I e-mailed Cary/AES a week ago and I am still waiting for a reply. They haven't always replied to my e-mails in the past.
Anyway my rectifier tube looks dark in the middle or burned looking, so I was wondering if it was old and might need replacing. Is your tube burnt looking or is this normal?I will be in Wilmington, NC ((2 hrs away from Cary) next week, so I thought I would drop it off if I have the time.
