Well, I have lost three auctions for sp-3's on ebay and I am seriously considering biting the bullet and buying a sp-16. I am looking for any feedback on this unit versus the sp-3 or eight. With the sp-3's going for 900-1000, the upgrade to the sp-3c takes you right to the 2k price range (around the sp-16). Leonard at arc assured me that the sp-16 will outperform the sp-3c in every way including the magical midrange. I am a little skeptical even though the sp-16 uses the same tubes. Please help....i need a preamp soon!!!p.s. I have also had some local recommendations for the BAT and AI. So hard to get away from ARC.

Follow Ups:
Look, the purpose of sniping is to enter a bid close enough to the end point of the auction so that no one can "up" their bid to get above your bid. In other words, you need to enter your bid late enough that it precludes "retaliation" by another bidder. This, of course, assumes that you have the high bid at that point in time. If you think about it, if you enter your bid anytime within the last 10 seconds, it will be impossible for someone to outbid you UNLESS THEIR BID IS ALREADY ABOVE YOURS. That is, with so little time left they won't be able to see your bid, decide to enter a higher bid and enter it before time expires. The ONLY need for a snipe program is to bid when you aren't able to get online yourself. For me, half the fun is bidding in real time and I would prefer not to give up the fun to some program. I'd suggest that you really need to decide what you'll pay for the unit and then just bid and hope for the best. It isn't sniping that is your problem -- you just aren't willing to pay the highest price.

Seems that you haven't been at this long enough to realize all the benefits of sniping. The snipe issue has been discussed ad-nauseum here, there and everywhere so I won't reiterate all of the advantages here. However.......One really useful benefit that the inexperienced bidder seems to regularly overlook is the fact that sniping conceals ones interest in a particular item.I routinely do epay searches for items of interest and then look at the other items the early bidders are bidding on. Usually what interests them interests me too. The process multiplies your search efforts many fold. The irony is that I'll then place a snipe bid for the item found this way and win more often than not he-he-he. I've found and won some really interesting stuff this way. My only concern is that this practice doesn't become the norm thus reducing or eliminating the advantage.

all sniping aside, Leonard's right. I've had the SP-16 in my system and was thrilled that, at least for line level sources, it was as good as my SP-8 Mk II. Phono was no comparison though, the SP-8 won hands down. This was with Raytheion 5751s in the linestage and Amperex Bugle Boy 12AX7s in the phono of both preamps. Unless remote control and a fugly faceplate are what you need/want, find a classic SP-8 (the later "Mk II" versions of course are a bit better, look for the 12AX7 in the power supply error amplifier instead of a 12AT7) and save some money. If you really want to spend 2k and are very serious about vinyl, go for an SP-10 Mk II. The phono kills any other ARC product, just beware of NOS addiction ... I've yet to find anything short of white label Amperex 7308s that I can live with in the phono stage. The linestage is pretty mediocre so tube quality doesn't much matter there.

They just want the item more than you do.If you were outbid, but were willing to bid more for the unit had you been given the chance, then I ask why didn't you enter your maximum bid in the first place ?
Best,
Else, you're right, he would just bid his maximum and let it ride. If he was willing to bid a few dollars ($3, $25?) more, then why didn't he? sometimes you have to pad your bid by a few dollars over market price. that way you don't lose out so bad, or you make the other guy pay even more for it, which can be satisfying too. :-)If you want to buy something below market price, generally the only way to do so is to snipe for it.

you are right...i have though about this in retrospect

The beauty of a snipe program is that you can place a bid early in the auction or not at all. No one knows you're interested so even though others might get involved in a bidding war and driving the price up - you don't have to do that. Let the program put your bid in within the last 5 secs.If you don't like the idea of "giving" the snipe program your ebay password - then change it as soon as you get the SP-3.
If you don't like the idea of using a snipe program at all (I personally don't) you might want to consider it just this one time to maybe help you get your SP-3.
You can download the program and use it free for one item at a time. If you want to snipe more than one item at a time or use the other features the program offers, then you need to buy it. Fran

I have suggested to Ebay that if anyone places a bid in the last 5 minutes that the auction goes on for another 5 minutes past its ending giving people more time to bid if they want an item. This could also be further extended until there is no more bidding. This would give the bidders more chances and the seller a chance of getting a better price.

seller has just as good a chance of getting a high price this way- the buyers who want something bad enough have to put in a high price early so they cannot be outbid by snipers later. This forces people to come up with their best price before the auction ends. If it just kept on going, no one would ever put in a high price and they'd go up by dribs and drabs forever. If you wanna buy on ebay, you gotta go for it.

Can't understand, I thought you were the seller based on the title. It's basically not your amp unless you have won the item. You can use esnipe, too but it will only push the price higher for cool items, especially when a few of the bidders used the same in the last few seconds.

just blowing off steam....I know they were not mine.
![]()
ya gotta be the high bidder whether you snipe or not to be the "winner." Don't know anything about these amps, if that's what you're asking, though.

If you are very good, you can get items without sniper. I get quite a few items without sniper. My bids shows zero (0) time left after submitting a bid, so timing is everything.
![]()
wow...that is impressive...are you bidding on sp-3's??? Maybe i can contract with you!
![]()
I have not bid speakers. I time the auction end with a stop watch & post bid with about 5-6 seconds left. It does involve the timing of your local ISP. Mine is slow here.
![]()
that is good- my last one was 3 seconds left. I've never used a sniper service, worried about giving them the password, etc.

Can't beat the adrenaline rush of sniping IMO; last time I bought some Kimber Select cable I sat up until 2.30am (I'm in the UK, cable was in the US) and missed out on an early night with the girlfriend.Snapped up the cables at a very decent price by waiting until the last 10 seconds or so to bid, and as a bonus the girlfriend was still awake when I got to bed - WAHEY!!! :0)
Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
