Hi RussSome of the 12AT7's I like personally are the GEC A2900 (triple mica and black plates), the early late 1950s Marconi B309 made by Mullard's Whyteleafe factory -- both are very musical, but the A2900 tends to be more dynamic while the B309 mellower and smoother. The Valvo coinbase ECC81 that was discussed in another post a while ago is also a good tube, though very rare. It has killer bass, but is found somewhat wanting in treble extension.
There are better ones, but I feel these offer the best value for the money.
Follow Ups:
I wonder if these A2900 were made by Brimar. It sonic character are almost similar except the Brimar also have deep bass and it cost around $10 each.

As far as I know, A2900 (sometimes labelled CV6091) were made by GEC. It is different from Brimar's ECC81 or 12AT7.

I would like to find the tubes you mention at the prices you said they go for

Here's one current auction of a quad set of Whyteleafe CV4024 which starts at $6:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3088194789&category=50598
The tell-tale sign is the square with the diagonal line that goes from top left to bottom right. That square stands for Mullard's Whyteleafe plant, just like "B" stands for Blackburn. Most to the time you have to ask individual sellers what the date code is in order to identify Whyteleafe tubes, unless you are very familiar with them and can spot them just by looking. This auction is easy since one of the pics show it.
Sometimes these were brought by Marconi and labelled B309. A lot of Whyteleafe tubes can be found in auctions from guys in downunder. Maybe it's because Mullard in its days used Whyteleafe production to service export orders -- but this is my wild guess.
Good luck in case you want to bid - I am not going to since I have enough stock to last for the rest of life.

As far as guitar amps go, I have to put these as my favorite flavor. I put some in a Twin recently and they were way better than the Mull's. But then again, everyone has different tastes. :-D.
