I am looking to return back to tub amps and have been away for many years. I have fond memories of my old Heathkit amp when I was a wee wippersnapper.Unfortunately where I live there is not much selection of amps in a price range I can justify. I have found two mfg that are in my range...one makes amps with EL34 the other uses KT88's. Both are Class AB amps.
In the long haul which is the better tube to play Rock and Roll...not earbusting volume levels but still R&R is not clasical music and would require diff mindset...I think.
Thanks for your opinions and I really don't want to start a flame war over this.
Follow Ups:
In my VAC PA100.100, EI KT90 type II's rule and can really rock the house.

I second the 6550.

Do like bass??? Some amps do it better than others, and IMHO this tips the balance for what you will be listening to. And can you build a kit??? If so, there are tons of possibilities. And Class AB is the only reasonable way to get enough power for real world speakers, unless you got Altecs....here come the flames....What are you looking at? How much do you want to spend? I heard some Quicksilver MidMonos recently, 50watts a side about $1850 USD. Very nice and they won't heat the house. Used Audio Research is worth considering too. In any case, try it at home before you buy, it's the only way to tell if it's right for you.

I spoke a bit out of school. The amp I am looking will take four diff types of tubes. Here goes:El34, KT 88. KT 100, KT 94 or 6550. Which of these are the best bet for R&R? The amp takes 4 of each tube and runs Class AB with a rated output of 55 watts per side.
Speakers are yet TBD....I am trying to do this on the same budget as the mrs would kill me if I spent big $$$ what she would consider a "toy"....I'm sure many out there have the same mrs problem.
The TungSol 6550 and the RCA 7027A. And the Sylvania 7581A-STR.
