NU never made a round plate 6SN7.In the picture, the black glass on the left in from late 1940's to early 50's vintage - a wonderful sounding tube.
The grey glass on the left is earlier, actually quite inferior sounding, somewhat scooped mids, unbalanced sounding.
Both have flat ribbed plates.

"Round plate tung sols are very nice. And National Union black and grey glass are a unique and rare variant."
Is it possible that NU made very few round plate versions (e.g. early 40s)? Or is that a categoric no?

but did you mean grey glass on the RIGHT is the inferior tube?

Sorry, I meant grey glass on the RIGHT...yes, the grey glass tube isn't in the same league as the black.

Robert,
Any reason that the gray glass NU shown, or for that matter most of the gray glass NU 6sn7/VT-231's, is not a rebranded RCA tube? From my inventory of both there is not one snit of distinction that I can find. If you don't think they are, what physical characteristics distinguish the RCA from the NU? This problem has vexed me for a while.
Mike
