Hello all,
I would like to know if the ATM-1 has an automatic bias setting, or if is it manual type?
I have the chance to buy a second hand one but since that it is far away from my home, I need to know if anyone tried this amplifier with ALTEC 19 speakers and/or if it is a good choice for ROCK music and high efficiency speakers such as ALTEC 19 or Klipsch La Scala.
I am afraid that the bass of ATM-1 is not controlled and powerful...
I thank you in advance for your help.
Kind regards,
Alex

Follow Ups:
AIR TIGHT ATM-1 is a very fine power amplifier. I do not think it has an auto-bias feature, so you have to set it right on your own if the unit you are buying is not properly maintained. Its output is 36W/channel (8 ohm)--more than enough to drive ALTEC 19 or Klipsch La Scala and it sure will "rock/swing" you hard. Its signal-to-noise ratio is 100dB, so the amplifier is supposed to be very quiet. As a power amplifier using two EL-34/6CA7's per channel in ultra-linear configuration, AIR TIGHT ATM-1 is one of the best sounding amplifiers ever produced. Again, it all depends on the condition of the unit you are buying. Good luck. M. N.

Hello M.N.
Thank you very much for your detailed answer.
I am still undecided because I heard that Air Tight is going to replace the Tamura output transformers with Sansui brand... I do not know if it's true or not. Maybe is better to wait the new version?
Furthermore, I have no experience to determine which output transformer is better: Tamura or Sansui.
If it is possible, please let me know your opinion in this regard.
Thank you in advance for your kind answer.
Best regards,
Alex

Dear Alex--Hi. I believe you are misled about the output transformer change in AIR TIGHT products. Sansui stopped producing audio transformers about 25 years ago. Besides, the company declared bankruptcy several years ago and is now controlled by a Hong Kong stock holding company. In sum, Sansui no longer exists as an audio equipment manufacturer. If you can find an old Sansui product, salvage and transplant the transformers, that would be great. But, again, there is no way AIR TIGHT can switch to Sansui transformers for use in their products. Tamura transformers are very good--no questiuon about that. With TANGO now being gone, Tamura is the only major audio transformer manufacturer in Japan--what a shame! Do ask the seller as many questions as you wish to before sending your money. Regards. Masayuki
