no glaring problems. Not too bright, not too soft. Pretty balanced. A bit veiled and a bit less "magic" than the best of NOS. If you're not gonna go with something like Siemens/Halske silverplates, Siemens 5814A, Raytheon 5814A, JJ would do fine.
I use the JJ ECC 82 in my tube pre. I prefer them to a set of Mullards at $40 a pair that I specially ordered from Upscale Audio. The Mullards-in my pre- were SLIGHLY quieter but too midrange dominant and obviously alot more expensive ( I recently ordered 5 JJ's for $35 from the tubestore com. They even offered- for no extra charge - to hand pick the quietest tubes after testing. Great service.Dale
why in the world should one bother with them when you can get superior NOS for the similar or just slightly higher prices. We spend all this $ on tube gear and then populate them with merely adequate tubes. I don't get that.You might want to check out some of the old American tubes such as the RCA black plate 12AU7, 5963 (very nice in my gear), or the Tung-Sol 12AU7. The RCAs are richer and more accurate in a tonal sense, while the T-S are clean and very musical. Dealers may charge a lot for some of these, but on ebay you can get them for cheap most of the time, and the quality is usually good if the vendor has a good rep. Try it, you' ll like it.
My JJ's sit in an ol' shoe box gathering dust. This is not to say that I don't like the JJ tube company, as I use some of their E 34L at times, and some others, but in critical positions where decent alternatives (affordable) are available, I try to go for the sonically superior tubes.
Although I am pleased with new manufactures providing new product and a future, NOS is the better route for best quality sonics. Recommendation above says it well.
This tube is the best of current production. It has bot the lowest distortion of all ECC 82/5814...., because of its unique geometric proportions of the plate arrangement.
