I have a Jolida JD1000 Integrated amp and Jolida JD-100 CDP. I have been talking to a fellow inmate here about replacing the stock tubes. The Jolida has 8 EL34's, 2 12ax7's, and 2 12at7 rectifier tubes. He has suggested playing with the preamp tubes 1st and has let me borrow his Svetlana 12ax7's which I like so far but I want to try more tubes before replacing the power tubes. My question is I have found some NOS 12at7 Mullards and wondering if these make much of a difference or should I leave the stock rectifier tubes in and concentrate on the power and preamp tubes. I have heard the Mullards are the best so some advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I prefer 5751 GE 5-Star with black plates in place of any 12AX7, but the gain is 25-30%.
As for 12AT7, the Sylvania Gold 6201 are excellent tubes.NOS EL34 can be expensive, however the older GE 'fat bottles' are a good sounding tube without spending mega dollars.
Every amp & system is somewhat unique thus naming an exact best tube for your application is not possible.
So, what's up when the replaced tubes do not meet your requirements. Also, finding 8 old stock tubes of similar condition is already a big job. I haven't seen two X quads of EL 34's put on sales.I think GEC A 2900 triple mica is one of the best I heard when used in my SF integrated amp. It would be worth trying other Mullard tubes (six digit code,TK 1, with square getter) or Brimar 6060 with T(trustworthy) logo to see if there is substantial change in sound quality, or most important, whether you like it.
I may be starting up a system of tubes on loan and deposit system (just make sure inmates would return the tubes)such that they can try the tubes on their systems, without spending too much money on tubes and remorse afterwards.
Yes I totally agree with you Koo. It can get expensive. I want to try the Mullards but you pay for them and if you dont like then??? Guess you can sell them but you would probably never get what you have in them.Seems most guys from what I have read try tubes in the $10 range(12ax7) and go from there. I hate to spend $120 on Svetlana EL34 and not like them but that is the beauty of this hobby...LOL
and while Mullard makes several fantastic tubes that are above most others I don't feel that's the case with a 12AT7. Not that a Mullard 12AT7 is bad mind you:) But I'd rather the 12AX7's were Mullard. But regardless, the best way for us to help you is if you tell us what tubes you are using now in what equipment and in what way you would like the sound to be different.
For some tubes one has a choice. The 12AT7 could be a 6201 or a 7308, not to mention the european types. Point is you have more choices than you know. It's all about how you want it sound compared to what you know have and how much you want to spend.
Myself, I like a GE 5 star 6201 for no more than 10 bucks (or pay more for a slyvania GP 6201), mullards or telefukens for the 12AX7's if you have money...or an older EI Elite for a nice dirt cheap tube. Current production EL84's ain't half bad so I wouldn't buy NOS.
Thank you Russ...The stock preamp tubes are to laid back and I want a tube that is a little more forward but smooth and silky. The Svetlana 12ax7 that I am trying is a nice step forward but I need to try others to see what they are like. I have heard the Mullards are the best but wonder if they are worth the price? I also have been told Telefunken, EH, and JJ's are good.
