Yes, as a tube declines, the highs become rolled off, the sound begins to lose dynamics and life, generally becoming dull and boring. You did the right thing!

My first clue a tube is fading is when I start to wonder what other mod I can tweek out of this unit. Then I replace a tube or two and it's back to the beautiful music.

Hello Charles,Thank you very much for your kind answer.
I agree definitely about your statement because this happens also to me, but the difference between us is that I'm just a beginner and I don't know nothing about tubes.
I learned a very sad lesson this time, because I replaced very, or better, extremely expensive tubes with the most cheap in the market and my system sounds better...Telefunken ECC803S with RCA 12AX7A and ECC802S with RCA 12AU7A!!! Now, I don't know the reason why? But based also on the Robert words, he confirmed that a dull sound is a clear signal that is time to change the tubes. Who sold the Telefunken to me stated that the tubes were NOS...
Thank you again and best regards,
Alex

Try putting the telefunkens back in while keeping the new EL34s. Small signal tubes last much longer than power tubes, so they may still be good.
