  with my service it would take forever to download some of the "free" manuals. I am not complaining but many times my service disconnects after about a half and hour and some of those would take and hour or so to download.

    You have my sympathy... It took me oh one minute to get that 3MB file.
    Got cable modem 3 years ago because it cost me the same as extra phone line plus internet service.
