Hello; after a nightmarish tangle of URL links I managed to hit the Tesla Chinetz factory in the Czech Republic (not the JJ plant in Slovakia) I inquired about purchasing their KT88 copperbase that is also sold as the KR KT88 for $380 a quad. They quoted me a price of $32 USD per tube with an individual test report and nice old style blue and yellow Tesla box with a 6 month replacement warranty on any defective tubes. $130 a quad beats the snot out of $380 or even $280...and puts this exceptional tube in the JJ/Svetlana price range, and I think the Tesla comes within a VERY short hair of equalling the sonics of vintage GEC KT88s. I have my first electrician job in about two weeks and plan to import a case of 36 tubes when my cashflow is positive. What I need is advice from Kevin Deal, Jim McShane, Uncle Ned, et al as to the procedure for such an undertaking-- to wit, do I need an importation license or other license to purchase them and have them shipped here? Any help greatly appreciated. Chris

Hi ChrisI've imported tubes, it's not too much of a hassle. One thing that will run your costs up is a customs broker. You can handle getting it through customs yourself, if you know the tarrif codes. I can get these to you and other information as well. Shipping is also very expensive. If you use FedEx they will handle the customs for you, but ask them about the charges. I've found the least expensive way to get tubes here is to shop carefully for shipping, and handle the tarrif thing yourself. You can handle the tarrifs yourself only if it doesn't exceed a value (the price you paid, not retail value) of $1,200 (not real sure of the exact amount, but can find out), also you are limited to 1 shipment a month. Email me at: twystd@austin.rr.com if you are interested in the tarrif codes, and advice on how to go about it (it's kind of tricky).

Chris,I would be interested in some of these myself and would be happy to be a part of your bulk order, providing you don't mind posting them to Australia.
Cheers
BrettPS: Would you mind passing along the Tesla URL?
Chris,
there is no special regulation to import tubes. All you have to do is pay the customs tariff. For electronic equipment it's 4.9% but I don't know exactly how much it is for a part such a tube. You can import it as a individual if you don't have your company. Call your nearest customs broker and ask for tariff #.
BTW, I was once in the factory and they are specialized in high frequency transmitter high output tubes , The KT88 is the only one kind of audio tube they make. Tesla and KRenterprises are two different manufacturers. Tesla has nothing to do with KR. Tesla in the Czech Republic was always famous for a high quality audio tubes. As far as I remember, Tesla split into many divisions, one of the division was making special capacitors for Japanese customers.
They are famous for very clean environment and high quality raw meterial.

Hi Chris,Do you know where I can find a photo of the copper base one? The only photo I can find is the black base one.
Thanks,
Hello my friend,
here u go

Hello BV,Thanks so much for the photo. I like the copper base ones better than the black base ones. I appreciate it.
Can you give some information as to other audio tubes they produce?
Again thanks and best wishes to you.
CM, like I wrote before, the KT88 is the only one type they make.
Their contemporary production is VHF and TV transmitters, RF generators, RF amplifiers- telegraphy.
Good tubes are also Tesla/JJ from Slovak Republic.

I will gladly sell quads to all interested when (if?) I get the Tesla KT88s. First, I've gotta find out if it's even legally possible or economically viable vis a vis import tariffs etc. Then I have to come up with the $1152 for the case of 36-- I start work as lead electrician on a new home above Crystal Lake in Northern MI in two weeks; I'll be making decent coinage but the $1152 will be accumulated after I repay my kind and generous parents the $1250 they floated me for my meds and food, etc. etc. I'm trying to work a deal with Andy at VTS to get a joint distributorship of these, and some of the other great Chintez factory Tesla tubes as well as selected types from around the globe that represent extraordinary value, like a few of Shuguang's offerings (their KT88 is excellent and retails for $80/quad and theit 12AX7, while not an Ei elite, is great for guitar amps etc. as they are largely non-microphonic) I'll post when all this happens. Chris

It sounds like you won't have any problems passing out a boat load of these kt88's. I could use (2) quads if/when they are available.

the seller will fill out forms listing what is being sent to you and the value. You will be responsible for paying a import tax usually on reciept of the items from the carrier. Im sure there is a government site that can give the costs. You do not need a license to do this.

Chris,Good luck and thanks. I would be willing.
Chris, can you start out with a smaller order? Or get money upfront from buyers? If I could use KT88s I would gladly pay up front and wait for delivery. Most of us here would also happily pay you a fair markup for your effort in obtaining these.

I guess I forgot to mention that I will have quads for sale at, basically, my cost to the good people on the asylum. Lord knows what I would do with 36 pieces. I'm going to ebay some also, and if I can make a modest profit will begin importing them by the gross. The Chinetz folks were most friendly and even offered to custom lable! Chris
