You've probably heard him playing zany slide on zillions of cartoons
from the 30's and 40's. He could make a ukulele sound like an fx
generator in an electronica band, you know, Chemical Brothers and so
on. He could make a four string tenor banjo sound like a Hawkwind
synthesizer. In an age of great slide players, he was untouchable.

I have no idea who Roy Smeck was or what he did...but a friend of mine had a "Roy Smeck" model Gibson acoustic guitar (which I'd also never heard of) and apparently this odd but unassuming little steel string guitar commanded so much on the used market that my friend was able to pay down his mortgage significantly. Weird.
