IT'S A FAKE!
A guitar touted as one Paul McCartney played in The Beatles was pulled from yesterday's Dick Clark memorabilia auction in New York. The autographed Hofner model, which had been displayed on Good Morning America, was removed from bidding after it was discovered the model was not made until 1978 -- eight years after the Fab Four split up.Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey's Auction House, said in a statement, 'In as much as time does not permit us to properly investigate the matter, the [item] will be removed from the event. Depending on the outcome of our research, the bass guitar may be offered at a future date.'
Andy Babiuk, author of the book Beatles Gear, doubts whether the guitar ever belonged to McCartney. He told A-B-C News, 'Paul only really had two Hofners while he was with the Beatles. The first one was stolen in 1969, and the second one was the one he used primarily throughout the Beatles, and he still owns it to this day.'
There's been no word on how Clark obtained the disputed guitar -- whether it came through a third party or from McCartney directly.

Follow Ups:
in Vegas once on sale for $4,500. I don't know what it was about that thing that made me think something was fishy. ;~)But for Dick Clark? There has to be more to the story.

I'm curious what bassists think about the Hoffner violin bass. When I played guitar in a high school band, the bassist had one with a terrible neck that wouldn't play right and was always out of tune. If this is generally the case, I assume McCartney had his rebuilt.

Paul was always having troubles with the Hofner going out of tune. I think it just became a signature look of sorts.
