In Reply to: Small Faces. Small Following ? posted by Chilt05 on December 16, 2003 at 10:34:09:
Was it me who made the recommendation? ;) (I'm actually listening to it right now before I even came online!)When people ask me what kind of music I listen to, I usually mention "oh, you know...British 1960s stuff mostly"... and they reply "like the Beatles and Stones?" Gosh no. Who (still underappreciated in my books, IMO), Small Faces, Creation, Cream, Pink Floyd.... They usually reply "I've heard of The Who and Floyd, but not the rest of them"...ARGH!
The fact that not too many people who are fans of the British 60s, are familiar with the Small Faces is pretty sad. And as experimental as they were in later in their career, I'd say their albums are more accessable than anything the Who or Stones have ever done. I do prefer their later material to their first album, which, despite a few good songs, is mostly generic bluesy, British rock.
It really is amazing... to put out an anthology of 50 songs, and not a single filler/crappy song on it really says a lot. Even the instrumental tracks on disc 2 are great, though my favourites are the soft, harpsichord driven tracks on disc 1 - that is where Steve's voice really shines.
Small following? That my friend, is a mystery. At least quite a few people are familiar with songs like Tin Soldier and Itchycoo Park. :)
I've heard some stuff by Humble Pie, but I felt they always had sort of a Bad Company (ugh) vibe to them. Maybe I'll look into their stuff later.
Follow Ups:
Great band - not like Bad Company at all. (I like early Bad Company in small doses)Check out these two Humble Pie albums. Mariott is in great voice on both:
1. Smokin'
2. Rockin' the Fillmore (one of the great live albums - done right before Peter Frampton left the group.)
The Immediate record label put out some very interesting albums. One reissue to check out, certainly, is Billy Nicholls , Would You Believe . His album was the most infamous victim of Immediate's decline--it was issued only in promo form before it was yanked. A really nice album, and while it won't change your life, it's quite good. Incidentally, Steve Marriott plays guitar and sings backup on the album. If you enjoy British psychedelia in general, and in particular by bands who were just a little more outside the mainstream, check out:
The End , Introspection (essential! and first U.S. pressings can still be had for relatively little $$$)
Pussy , Plays
Dark , Round the Edges
Ithaca , A Game For All Who Know
July , July (some great tracks and some so-so ones, but worth a listen for its best moments)
Mighty Baby , Mighty Baby (great post- Action album, with flashes of total brilliance)
Andwella's Dream , Love and Poetry
Kaleidoscope , Tangerine Dream
A-Austr , A-Austr (opinions differ on this album--I'm not so wild about it, but some folks I know love it)
Tomorrow , Tomorrow
And these last two are must-haves:
The Open Mind , The Open Mind
The Koobas , The Koobas
Nothing like Bad Company. You owe it to yourself to get their first
(s/t) album, the one with the Aubrey Beardsley cover. You are in for a
treat. Regards,
I bought it too. Good stuff!
mentioning that compilation fellow Canuckman.
As it turned out I was interested in hearing the Small Faces not having heard a thing by them in my 42 years!(although once I
heard "Itchycoo Park" IT was immediately familiar from, like,
another life). Unknown forces then sent me far to a HMV on the other
side of town with fingers crossed - not my usual CD hunting ground -
and I lucked in. Best 23 bucks I've spent on a CD in a long time,
and a double one with 50 songs to boot!
Just as much fun discovering old music as new music.
Thank You.
I hope you get extra goods in your Christmas sock.
Thanks for the kind words :)If you've heard Itchycoo Park before, the Canadian band Rhymes with Orange covered it. And, another Canadian band, Streetheart covered Tin Soldier. A lot of Cancom radio stations played these songs to death. I prefer the originals though :)
I agree...HMV is not the best place to buy music. They do have the occasionally good 2 for $20 deals, but their regular priced stuff isn't worth it. www.absound.ca is my favourite place to shop for music and good deals.
