Is Sam the Man still open in Toronto? HMV? Virgin? Also, what's a good cd store, audiophile or otherwise in Quebec?
Follow Ups:
Just got back from a first visit to Archambeault in Longueil (Brossard). Picked up a few disks that I quite enjoy. I cannot say I shop as often as I like, to be able to know how prices compare. They seemed to have a wide selection, and quite a few listening stations. There was also a computer station to look uo various music on, presumably to take the printout to the staff to see if they get it for you. I did not see too much "audiophile" stuff; they had Patricia Barber Café Blue, for example, but I did not see the HDCD version. Happy shopping.
Hey that's MY store too :-)Best CD selection on the South Shore for jazz, blues, world.
Some SACD and some DVD-A but not many. Audiophile CDs? Not really.

Sam's main store is still open, but now under the dubious direction of Sam's son Jason, who was the one who ruined the chain in the first place. It's now a discount outlet for junk CD's and has a hard time getting any stock. Dead long ago but for some reason the corpse is still twitching.HMV has it's own issues. It's battling with it's customers, cutting down drastically on it's back catalog and jacking the prices up to take advantage of the lesser competition. No more returns of open stock, no more discount cards, seriously declining stock and ripping off on the pricing at every turn. It's still the best game in town, but it's own stupidity has caused a serious drop in sales. They too seem to have a hard time getting some of the non-hit parade new releases, probably not paying their bills too quickly.
Good news from Toronto. Virgin is opening up soon. Can't happen fast enough as far as I'm concerned, I loved HMV before they got crooked & arrogant, but now I would buy from anyone else.
They say the record industry is alienating it's customers. So are a lot of retailers.
I'm not familiar with the management of Sam's. I was in Halifax a while back and Sam's on Barrington St. was open. They didn't have that much stock in the classical section, but the garrulous old fellow working their was expecting more stock soon. They didn't have that much in jazz and world music, either. The fellow on the classics floor told me that Sam had bought back the Toronto store and the Halifax store from the bank. There may be some franchise stores still associated with Sam's, too.

Was in Vancouver last September and visited the Virgin store there and was appalled at the prices. Nothing under $20 in the CD format, but a nice selection of vinyl, too bad about the prices.
The downtown HMV in Toronto is carrying more vinyl these days, at decent prices ($15+).
Not really looking forward to the Virgin store here in Toronto, based on my experience in Vancouver. Will give them a chance before writing them off.Brian
where in to is virgin supposed to open?
I have no idea of their location, despite the eminent rumour of the past two years. I'll try to remember to post the news.Brian
