Remember it was very dramatic sounding, and was used at times to give a bit more tension to action scenes in the show.
I think it was also used in the radio version of the series...

THANKS everyone for the info!

While looking around for a bit more info on the music after learning the title, I also came across this list of Theme music for Radio shows & noticed a number of them used Classical music.
nt.
Bit of a stumper. I'm trying to hear it in my mind. There's a chance it was original, maybe by the Hot Chili Peppers. Oh, Pancho! Oh, Ceesco!
From radio days, you're probably thinking of the "Donna Diana Overture" by the Austrian composer Emil Nicholaus Von Reznicek (1860-1945).
Wow, if you actually knew that and didn't look it up, I am WAY impressed.
Knew the music's name (a long-time fav since my youth in front of the big parlor radio!) and composer but had to look up spelling of his name. Incidentally, does anyone know of anything else Reznicek wrote? Or was he a one-hit wonder?
Favorites of mine too, both the music and the Sarge. And I would have had to look up the spelling also. Thanks for saving me.If memory serves, and the increasing years act as an impediment to that, Resznicek was a band master and best known for his operettas, of which "Donna Diana" is one, I believe.
What a thrill it was, 20 years after the Yukon had melted, to run across a recording of the work and get to listen to a whole 8 or 10 minutes instead of just 30 seconds.
Got to run. On King! On you huskies!

"(X-ers, eat your hearts out.)"I wasn't there the first time around, but we watched syndicated reruns on weekend mornings IIRC. One of my favorite "old" shows, after The Twilight Zone.

Good to know another "Prestonian". Too bad you couldn't have listened on the radio. It really was fun. You could color or build a model and still not miss your favorite shows. It's interesting that I've played some old radio shows for my 7th grade classes, and they love them. Surprised the heck out of me. Wish radio still had some dramas on, not just music and news.
Any chance you're a "Prairie Home Companion" too?
I've been listening to PHC since the mid-80's. My wife has recently started reading some of GK's books too and is really enjoying them. You bet.

not only did i know the name i claim the honor of having it on cd - i don't know if it still in print but its "Late Neo-Romantic Classics" by Georg Tintner on CBC records, catalog # 5167 (issued in 1997). other good stuff on this disc - including schreker's valse lente and humperdink's overture & dream pantomine from hansel & gretel.
With some other overtures. Eric Kunzel, I believe. Have it somewhere.
"Victory At Sea", The U.S. Navy Band. 1998 recording. The Donna Diana Overture has been basic repertoire in concert band libraries for a number of years.
