I never listen to the snobs who would classify Brubeck as "light." These are the same type of people who dismiss Vivaldi as favored only by yuppie, wine and Brie people.Listen up! Mr. Bach thought very highly of Vivaldi, and his opinion carries more weight than yours--whoever you are.
And Mr. Ellington thought very highly of Brubeck, and his opinion carries more weight than yours, whoever you are.
Muzikmike, here are my two Brubeck favorites:
"We're All Together Again First Time", w/Gerry Mulligan. Has the most awesome version of Take Five. Desmond and Mulligan improvising off each other in a way I never knew either of them could.
"Blues Roots", also w/Mulligan. Honkey-tonk/stride/blues stuff like nothing else Brubeck has ever done.
I'll look for The Riddle"--thanks for the tip!
Follow Ups:
Along with "Time Out", check out "Countdown: Time in Outer Space" on Columbia and "re-union" and "Dave Brubeck Plays and Plays and Plays..." (solo piano) on Fantasy from the mid 50's.Dan C
about the take five on we're all-i just love it. ive had my copy of 'jazz impressions of eurasia' in mono for a long time, just washed and played it last week and its another gem. same with 'live in berlin' w/mulligan (last week).
i made a cassette for one of the bari players in my daughters HS band and his comment was that brubecks time signatures were VERY difficult. light? i DONT think so! sometimes by the end of a piece, the times are reverberating on top of themselves because db kept right at them until they overlapped.
just because music has a wide appeal doesnt make it into light music. just remember when t5 was released, it came to us on regular radio mixed in with r&r! same with previns music.
i was really pist when previn took that lowly job in england! i guess i just didnt realize it was the oportunity of a lifetime for him.
im going to continue buying brubeck albums to save the great unwashed from slipping into uhhhhhh, light music.

For that matter, why aren't I in bed!23 cats! And I thought 3 drove ME nuts! (Just took a look at your system).
Yes, "We're all together..." is great...got it from my Mother-in-law as a Christmas gift one year...I think she did it so that she could listen to it when she visits...she's a jazz fan, married to a C&W fan, poor woman.
When she visits it's a week of non-stop jazz!
