I wouldn't recommend it as the one and only. None better on some of the late sonatas, but...better to pick and choose, really. Schnabel's Appassionata is a disappointment. To get a beginner started I recommend Rubinstein's set on BMG: Moonlight, Pathetique, Appassionata, etc. Excellent performances, perhaps not up to the ultimate, but very enjoyable. As stated Solomon and Richter are fantastic on what they put out. I'm less sanguine on Gilels, although he's no fluke. Pollini is a whizbang pianist on the late sonatas. Kempff is excellent on the some of the sonatas. Gould is excellent on a few of them. Others are quite wayward interpretations. I'd avoid Gould, here, in general. Bach is where I'd recommend Gould.
Follow Ups:
...and I actually preferred his Appassionata over Richter's. Still trying to find Gilel's playing of the late sonatas.
The final movement does not get it for me in the Gilels Appassionata. Richter is better here, still, even he slips a bit. Surprisingly, I like Perahia's finale the best although I'll concede Richter and, perhaps Gilels, are better in the first two movements. It's been too long since I've heard the Gilel's Appassionata. I sold the disc after getting the Perahia. So what does all this mean? I guess I'm still waiting for THE Appassionata.
I may agree on the Waldstein. Like I said I sold the disc, can't check it now.
.
