In Reply to: Where to start with Steve Earl? posted by sjb on May 08, 2002 at 18:24:15:
If you like Steve Earle (as I do), here's a couple of other suggestions:Marah, "Kids in Philly"- These guys are signed to a label that Earle started. It's a compelling mix of alt-country, rock, r & b.
Ryan Adams- He tills in the same field as Earle. He's not as good a singer (nobody is), but he definitely has some great chops as a writer. Has solo albums and albums as part of the group Whiskeytown. Bonus: any of his stuff produced by Ethan Johns is really well done, from an audiophile standpoint.
The only album of Earle's to avoid is the live one, BTW.
Follow Ups:
With all due respect for your esteemed position, I was surprised to see that you consider Earle a good singer esp. in contrast to Ryan Adams. He's always seemed in that group of Leonard Cohen, Dylan, John Prine etc. who you listen to for reasons other than the sound of their voice (and maybe the voice eventually grows on you).Just my 2 cents,
Your loyal subject, Bruce
Steve Earle isn't a good singer, he's a great singer.Go listen to three songs: "Tecumseh Valley" from "Train A Comin" is a beautiful pearl; Earle's voice paints as much of the story picture as Townes Van Zandt's words do. "More Than I Can Do" from "I Feel Alright" -- if you look at the words, it reads like a stalker's song, really, but without breaking a sweat, Earle makes you realize it's about a guy who can't quit on the woman he clearly loves.
And then, there's "You're Still Standing There", also from "I Feel Alright", where Earle does something I didn't think any mortal man could do -- hold his own in a duet with Lucinda Williams (actually, he does more than that). Brilliant singing. Compare that with one of my favorite Ryan Adams' tunes, "My Sweet Carolina", a song where Emmylou Harris duets with Ryan on the chorus. Ryan's good, but not in Earle's class.
He may not have the greatest range or polish, but I can think of very few popular music singers today who can pack as much wisdom and heart into every note they sing as does Steve Earle.
Thank you for your continued support,
SB
When you said "good singer," I thought you were talking about "range and polish" i.e. the mere sound of his voice. If you mean "wisdom and heart," then it's OK to call him a good singer--like Dylan, et al.
My favorite Earle tune is "Someday" (from "Guitar Town" I think), but I like it better done by the more pleasing voice of Shawn Colvin on "Cover Girl." I don't think it loses its wisdom & heart, but it sounds better. Earle's just never been my cup o' tea.Would a contribution to your slush fund patch things up between us?? :-)

A good singer is a person who can get the right sentiment of the songs to us the listeners. Mariah Carey has better vocal range than Steve Earl. But couldnt sing her way out of a paper bag from the crap that Ive heard out of the radio. Steve can do a whole lot with very little. Ryan Adams is very good but not there yet. Just to recap
Earl very good, Adams relly good, Carey absolute shithouse.

.....then Tom Waits is the finest male singer ever to grace the planet.Best Regards,
Chris Redmond.
Exactly! Tom Waits singing his style is as moving emotionaly as
Kurt Elling or the Fairfeild Four or Jimmy Cliff. On the day with the song and the performance you would be surprised what can be the best or better. The critera for grading is very dynamic otherwise you would only own one song because its the best. I dont think this is the case with anyone on this post who takes the time to share their love and learning of music. Seeya Tim
......the more Tom has to drink, the more emotion he puts into the performance; I believe there`s a lesson there for all artists - certainly, despite the criticsm in this thread I hear Mariah Carey performs especially well with a couple of double vodka`s down her, although her singing`s another matter :0)Best Regards,
Chris Redmond.
I think we need the double vodka to make her sound better.
