My favorite recording so far is by the Hagen Quartet on DG (it may be OOP), also like the Julliard, but I would be interested in other recommendations, particularly from those folks expert in some of the older mono recordings.
Follow Ups:
First on Naxos, second on Supraphon.clark
Prague on Supraphon must be OOP cannot locate it, although I do find the Panocha Quartet on the same label. Guess I will try the Naxos then. Thanks.

I agree with Clark on them. The Naxos recording with the Vlach Quartet of Prague is very fine, both as to performance and sound, as are their other recordings of the late quartets. They are truly a world class ensemble.

the prague is actually on DG & has a complete collection of the quartets for reduced price (they're not available individually) ...there're actually several other mature quartets that are comparable to the 'american' but haven't become popular in the same way, but i'm not sure what the earlier pieces are like (i bought all the late quartets on vinyl when they came out in the 70'6...)...i always enjoyed the performances greatly and found they had plenty of verve but the recordings were so -so, not bad, but made behind the iron curtain in the 70's...
having said that, i'm not sure what there is for historic performances except maybe the smetana quartet's version on testament SBT1074...
