...words written by [Sir] John Barbirolli in 1931:"It is the highbrow who drives the ordinary man, in sheer self-defense, to avoid concerts and operas like the plague, laugh at the very idea of buying a "classical" record for his gramophone, and switch off his wireless set at the sound of the words 'Symphony Concert'. And to those of us who love music sincerely and would wish all the world to share our own intense joy in it, this is a saddening thought."
...and a recent comment from a fellow music lover [on another BBS]:
"I find these words profoundly true. It is very easy to bash the ignorant mass (who hates to be lectured) but it is not so easy to give up the attitude of being a better and more noble being just because one loves classical music."
Some things never change.
So, "don't worry, be happy." -Bobby McFerrin, 1988.

Follow Ups:
I understand and even agree with your sentiments, Jay. However, most folks around here have never, after all this time, really understood my position. It's not so much that I feel that classical music and jazz (which I love) are superior to other styles of music, but that popular styles, their performers and listeners, are so content, so enraptured, so utterly commited to keeping their music in the merde filled sewer.
They resist any attempt to evolve, improve and grow. None of them, from the guitar crazed 16-year-old to the aging 59-year-old rocker of yesteryear, to the rock critic, to the rock listener - none have any concept of moving their "music" forward, of demanding more from it then its never changing 4/4 rhythm, its 3 dumb chords, or its severly limited range of expression.Pop/rock COULD be more than it is. Over its lifespan there have been isolated moments that've pointed the way. But, these have been suppressed, ignored or forgotten. Rock/pop (and I include all sub-genres in this category, from the anti-musical chanting known as "rap", disco, heavy metal, AOR, MOR, cowntry, etc., etc. ad nauseum) listeners refuse to demand more from it. It's practitioners, so called musicians, remain for the most part musically barbaric. They seem congenitally incapable of grasping even the most rudimentary priciples
of music. All of my posts have always had the intention of shaking the post listerner out of their hermetically sealed box. I have never sought to simply insult people.
That stuff was bland and uninvolving, the "soft rock" of beer, as it were, way back when, when all that was around was macrobreweries.Neward, get the to a Summit Extra Pale Ale, from the great white north, St. Paul, Minnesota.
You'll never go back.
It is my belief that you are sincerely trying to share the deep joy that music has brought you. And you obviously know and love it deeply. It is my opinion that this could be done without using such polarizing phrases as "merde filled sewer", "musically barbaric", and "congenitally incapable". These are insults, and it is quite disingenuous to later claim "I have never sought to simply insult people." The responses provoked by this inflammatory rhetoric add heat, but little light. Educating people about classical music is a noble endeavor; does it really need to be accompanied by broad disparagement of other forms of music?
But, is there anyone in the whole wide world taking pop/rock to task and forcing it to examine it's smug conceits?I think I'm performing a valuable service, even if it's a painful discipline.
I think you enjoy pushing people's hot buttons, including my own. As far as I am concerned, it adds some needed life to the message board. All in good fun.
"They seem congenitally incapable of grasping even the most rudimentary priciples
of music."I believe the most rudimentary principle of music is that it connect emotionally with the listener. They get that just fine.
"I have never sought to simply insult people."
Well, you sure fooled me.
Sophisticated music can touch the soul too. And "Rock" harder than any thing you can imagine. There are other artistic imperatives, not all of them can be filtered through a "most basic is the most Real" scenario. (not that you said that, and not that I am accusing you of intimating it.)
Frankly I hate constantly having to justify a non popular music opinion. But it is clear that (on this site?) when some one ventures a contrary opinion he is met with a stunned, if vocal, disbelief. Hey I'm not saying the "He" is perfect but who is.

Are you trying to convert us? Music is a personal trip. I come to this site to expand my musical horizons, JAZZ/BLUES has had an incredible affect on my life and the way I listen to music, and I am currently building my classical collection. I LOVE MUSIC!!! from Bobby Blue Bland to Ornate Coleman, Jelly Roll Morton to Puccini.Music is a never ending adventure I hope to expand my whole life. I enjoy many of your posts and have learned from you, but I suggest you quit trying to conform everyone to see things your way and refrain from responding to posts you may not agree with, as many are refraining from you in order to enjoy this site.
"none have any concept of moving their "music" forward, of demanding more from it then its never changing 4/4 rhythm, its 3 dumb chords, or its severely limited range of expression."
I suggest you expand your horizons and sit down with Muddy Waters album "Folk Singer" album and see what Muddy, Willie and Buddy can do with that dumb I IV V chord structure...You’ll never get it.
“my posts have always had the intention of shaking the post listener out of their hermetically sealed box.” - you can’t open your mouth without your foot in it...
I will not respond to any further posts, nor read any of you future posts. I may not be back.
