It's just that I can watch an opera production only once but listen to an opera many times. The visual element (even on the new plasma) simply tires with repetition. I've gone through a few dozen operas and concerts, beginning with the LaserDisk of Peter Grimes and most recently with the Chereau Ring.Just me.

Hi Kal - same with movies in general for me - 1 time = enough. audio only = many times. Best, Freddy

Yes, there are many movies that only bear watching once, but there are a few that I can enjoy seeing again after a period (generally a few years). More so with a good operatic production. A few are not appealing so yes, once / 10 years is enough but there are others that I can enjoy seeing again many times, especially productions like the Lyudmila with its lavishmess. And, as with a good CD collection, having more than one performance of a work, gives variety and that is reputed to be the spice of life :-)But I'm not arguing with the general premise that audio repetition is more appealing than video repetition and that explains the ambivalence mentioned in the original post.

No cure possible or is solicited for this audio, video and classical music obsession. I love it!

you can win both ways with a good DVD performance - just use as "radio" - if ever reaches that point. Best Wishes

The sound quality on most DVDs is inferior to comparable CDs/SACDs/DVD-As.
That's why I rent DVDs and collect CDs (and DVD-As and SACDs and LPs).Kal
