Google is great for most things and does yield valuable hits on individuals - particularly artists, often as a result of fan clubs or promos by the record companies. However, as my experience with the Liszt/Berlioz query below demonstated, get into other areas of music and it is difficult to get beyond the advertising hype. Opera is well covered by specific opera loving sites but beyond that it seems difficult to get answers.

... record reviews but that is not what I really am looking for. I guess I want a classic music encyclopedia site like Groves, without paying the very high price for the privilege. The net has made us rather stingy!!!!Thanks for the link anyway - it has gone into the "Favourites" box :-)

The Library of Congress (the US National Library) catalogs more stuff than any other institution on earth. You can find records in there for stuff that went out of circulation before you were born. The LC catalog is online and free and a wonderful gift from the US to the rest of the world. Use guided search and use the Keyword Anywhere option in the combo boxes. When entering names of people, use last name, first name. Would be nice if they had a few more textboxes for specifying things but the sheer volume of stuff in the catalog is awe-inspiring.

Just select classical music from the combo box and go into advanced search. You can search on composer, conductor, label, title.
