Stein, along with Schoenberg and Berg, were members of the Viennese Society for Private Musical Performances, which was dedicated to spreading the word about Mahler's music. They felt that chamber music arrangements of Mahler had a greater chance of being peformed, given the prevaling anti-Mahler sentiment in the orchestral world. The exception to this was, of course, Amsterdam, where Mengelberg conducted many, many performances of Mahler's symphonies.Thank you, Sev, for showing us all, once again, what a hot-headed, narrow-minded pedant you are.
