I just want a cheap 2/channel machine to play DVD-V & SACD for a small 2 speaker system in the bedroom, & was told, hopefully unreliably, that this unit is not a "true" SACD machine? Could someone please shed some more light? Thanks!!
Follow Ups:
I have this machine and it is a true sacd player. Not sure how it could play sacd's otherwise but some claim that it down converts the DSD bitstream to PCM when using as a MCH playback or with bass management function. Others have said that in SACD 2ch mode that it does not convert the DSD bitstream to PCM before the D2A conversion. Others say they hear no difference. Can't say, as I have never listened to the cd or sacd analog outputs. I have been using as a dvd player and cd/dad transport only to outboard dac. It has a great picture and plays DAD discs that a $1500 universal transport would not. It's damn sure the cheapest Universal format machine out there but I would not expect miracles from the analog section.
Can you play SACDs through your external DAC ?
digital out. With some ps mods this is a very fine transport.ja in hot and dry, and clear, Tucson, AZ
The Elaborate DAC=55/76 or 27 Balanced Preamp=Balanced Six Pacs=Newform Research 645
i find it to be built pretty well, i ahve had mine since Nov '03, no problems as oh yet , but on anotehr note , i ahve a old pioneer dvd player from '99 , that is still kicking around still , so i really doubt reliability is gonna be an issue with this product (knock on wood ;^) )
I think this has to do with the fact that when using the bass management, the DSD is converted to PCM. Whether this is detrimental, I don't know. If you don't use the bass management though, the DSD is not converted.
What does this really mean,,,am I getting SACD out of this unit, right out of the box, & not activating the bass mngt?
Yes, you will get SACD out of the box. The issue with this unit is as stated by Tony. I have this unit and find that is a fantastic bargain to enter the worl of Hi Res and MC. If you have full range speakers or close to full range, you would just set the 563 speaker settings to all speakers large, thereby avoidiing the conversion to PCM. However having said that many people have stated that the PCM conversion dosen't seem to be matter. Buying an entry level Sony would avoid this issue but then no DVD-Audio. Head over to the Home Theater Forum and do a search in the Audio Video Sources forum for DV563 and you will find an extensive thread on this unit.
This unit is an excellent place to get your feet wet with multichannel music. They are selling for around $150 now at Best Buy. By one of these, pick up a couple of SACD's and DVD-A's and have at it. If you feel the sonics aren't quite up to par in a couple of months, throw it up on Audiogon or something and move up to something a bit higher end. Pioneer makes two Elite Universal players and Marantz and Denon also make some more $$$ players as well. For me, it's all I need and it gets the job done quite nicely.
