I finally took the plunge. In my very rural area you have one choice besides sat, DSL from the only phone company. There is no cable here. I checked my speed on a few sites and get about 1.18 megs. I had to do a registry fix in Windows to get that, when they installed it I was at 300K. So my question is I am very music hungary and want to use internet radio and other sites to hear at least clips of music to help me find some new music. Last year was really bad musicwise for me anyway and I am in dire need of new stuff. I like going to CD sellers sites to hear clips but you really need to know the artists name first. Any suggestions on ways to find new stuff would be appreciated.

I know Beth is doind solo work now. Not sure where I heard about the breakup, but that is what I recall.
Beth is releasing a solo as well~"Barrow told BBC 6 Music that he was surprised people thought the band had split up, saying: "We've just had our heads down really, we've never actually broken up, or parted, or whatever."~
~"However, the band are not expected to play any new material at the show, which will feature singer Beth Gibbons playing with an acoustic backing."~

I wasn't into it at all, - but that's just me....
To me the strength of Portishead was their drumming, and creative hybrid hip-hop/trip-hop, new sounds kind of thing....
album but I'm a Talk Talk fan too - the weirder the better...

You can go visit my own site first and listen to the radio there. (bottom left of main page)On my links page you can get to indie radio which is also good. Any of the things you hear there you can find from the retailers listed on my links page as well.
You can also check my best of year lists to see what you might have missed. The past two years were pretty good ones actually.
If you want to watch something so new you can't get it quite yet, go to the Labrador website and watch the video for Why Does Nobody Listen. The album should be available on my sites sister shop Popsicle within a week.
In any case I commend you. At least you're fed up and looking. I hope you find something you like.

And there are dozens of others I've sampled, but I don't have high speed Internet at home. Here is a link that will take you into worldwide internet radio.

KCRW happens to be my local radio station and the only one I listen to except when I'm in a classical mood. Very eclectic programming in different music genres. Check out their programming and show play lists along with the archived live in the studio recordings of the Morning Becomes Eclectic show. Highly recommended.

Download Winamp 5 and check out all of the internet radio stations available.Check out epitonic.com for free and legal mp3 downloads.
If you interested in paying, aside from the obvious stuff like iTunes, check out eMusic.com. Their focus is on the independent labels rather than the majors.

Thanks-very nice. Listening right now. I did see KPFA now archives.(kpfa.org) Have you ever listened to "Off the Beaten Path" DJ Seps show? Very nice. She is on live every Monday night at 10 PST. Now that they archive she's on whenever one wants. Radio 365 is OK too. Huge Eletronica and World/Asian list of stations and its free to listen(with ads-but not many). If you pay there are no ads.http://www.live365.com/listen/index.live
Thanks again!
two blocks from my house, - haven't got over there in a while though. KPFA is programmed into my bedroom tuner, - I'll do some listening.I mostly listen to Echoes and Hearts of Space programs on the SF station KALW, - they are also on the Web. There's also a great program on Saturday nights called Tangents that I like a lot....
Cheers,
Musical Starstreams on XM 72, I think you can listen on the web as well. Most of the music is from the Waveform records catalog.WOMB radio out of Miami Beach is also good.
WVUM (University of Miami) is an excellent college station.
Check out Sleepbot Environmental Broadcast. Just google it...
