Record stores weren't just places to spend paper route money. They were practically houses of worship...Guys kept an eye on what the girls were buying. We mostly ignored anyone in the Osmonds section. We tried everything we could think of to talk to the ones looking at Rolling Stones albums...
A record was a cheap, legitimate date. No money for movies? Nothing worth watching on any of the three TV channels we could receive? Hey, want to come over and hear the new Dylan album?...
Playing a record was practically an art form in cool, especially in front of a girl...
[Great article!]

Follow Ups:
I have heard the vinyl experience now likened to the Japanese tea ceremony. Not sure about that, but I do know that vinyl records have my heart when it comes to music "software" and its about all I play these days. I do regret that SACD did not take off for jazz and pop music though. There are record stores where I am, but not many shopping in the vinyl sections. This is a bit fine with me as I do find some great stuff (but I am not looking for 25 cent albums). I could talk about my latest "score" but I don't want to overexcite my fellow VA friends.
Every young person seems to be on My Space these days. My older daughter found her fiance that way...
I can't help but find it ironic that the same sort of technology allows you to easily share these kinds of stories with the rest of us. Sometimes it is good, I suppose.
