the coax requires less processing and is supposed to sound better. My experience has shown that the optical sounds better.

I think the reason optical sounds better is it keeps the RFI at the digital source. Electrical connections bring the RFI to the rest of the system. This is also why I generally prefer separate transport and DAC (with optical link) over one-box players.

Wow, nice to see someone else has had the same experience. I prefer optical on my system as well but never said so for fear of being kicked out of the Asylum.

Optical cables not being subject to RF/EMI. Optical is so free of that problem I have seen broadcast-quality gear run through a 25-spool of optical cable with no perceptible degradation.
You should try one of the "glass fiber" Toslink IC's. They have wider bandwith than any co-ax and they can be had for less than $30.There, I said it. An inexpensive IC is good. Now they'll have to throw us all out of the Asylum.

I am using a Monster Interlink Lightspeed Reference cable which sounds pretty good to me, but, for $30.00, I guess I should try out some glass cables.

I had the Monster Lightspeed as well Squonk in my system and while it was a good performer the Dayton glass toslink bettered it enough to hear it audibly in my system. Parts Express for about 30 bucks depending on length, silly performance for the money, and very high quality as well. Ive bought several to go with my relatively higher level equipment with no regrets!BEST...
Just purchased one. :)

Trust me, you'll be selling the Lightspeed Ref soon.
