Is it OK to buy these at sale prices? Are they as good as new or only almost as good as new? Will it be a gamble buying these? If we are buying new, should we look for sealed boxes? Will refurbished ones be in sealed boxes? Are we trusting the integrity of the sellers totally ?

90% of so-called refurbished goods are defective junk! It rarely pay's to buy them.
... a few things I would check into are:- Is the reason the unit was refurb'ed disclosed?
- If the refurb'ed unit still has problems, who pays for the return of the unit to the warranty center?
- If you get it back from the warranty center and it still has problems, do you have to pay to send it in again?
- If you get it back from the warranty center and it still has problems, can you get a replacement unit at some point?
I finally gave away a nice cd player that I bought as a refurb because it had a highly unpredictable problem that would lock up the player. However; I kept getting it back from the warranty center saying it checked out fine. The shipping costs *far* outweighed what I saved over buying a new unit.
Also, it would depend on what I was buying. I'd be much more comfortable with buying a pair of speakers that had been refurbed because of a cosmetic defect than a cdp (or anything with lots of moving parts) for mechanical reasons.
In the interest of balance, I have bought refurb'ed items that woked and looked flawlessly. But my experience wih two cdp's was a nightmare. Granted, there's a certain roll of the dice in refurb. Many of them, probably most, work out fine.
I believe that refurbished are the best values in the marketplace. They are usually customer returns of new products that have a problem sonically or physically. The item is checked 100%, rebuilt to 'as new' standards and repackaged. Sometimes, to save money, new packaging is not included.
Buying a refurbished item is purchasing a product with 100% Quality Control, which is sadly atypical these days. These usually carry a new warranty status. A great value for hard earned dollars.
Yes,its a great advantage that the refurbished ones get a thorough look. That way it would be preferable to a brand new one the quality of which is unknown.Even some of the very expensive equipments that the magazines review have problems and the editor has to ask the manufacturer to send another sample. We may never know about the problem and may get stuck with a defective item for life! Thanks for the advice.
I agree 0. One of the best deals I ever got was on a refurbished SACD player at half price. Worked perfectly and never had a problem, while I read of others with the same model having various troubles. If it was something I wanted, I would not hesitate.
Best bang-for-the-buck as far as new equipment is concerned.
My CSW model 6 speakers were refurbished....$90, with a 10-year warranty......can't beat that!!
