Quattro-Fil comes up often on Audiogon for very good prices -- seen $700 for 1M RCA, $800 for 1M XLR. 2m prices not much more, IIRC. I'm saving up for some as well.
Follow Ups:
I agree with this approach if you like the Quattro-Fil, which is a fine cable. I sold the 1 meter pair for $700 on A-Gon, and my 2 meter pair for $850 to a gentleman who is having me send it to Nordost for cutting and reterminating into two one meter pairs (don't know what that's running him, but I figure it's in your ballpark, you could call Nordost and ask). BTW, I'm replacing the 2 meter run with the HMS suggested below, as I like the tonal balance of the HMS a little better than the Q-F (a little richer in the mids, with most, if not all, of the transparency and detail of the Q-F); that would also be a viable alternative to consider, although if you like the Nordost, I think the used/retermination route is a really good way to go.
That's interesting what you say about Quattro Fil and HMS. I love my Quattro Fil, especially its detailing and speed. IMS it does not sound lean, in fact midrange is glorious and rich (all tubes).Even in reviews of Valhalla IC vs. Quattro Fil, reviewers mention that while Valhalla IC has more bass bloom and "naturalness," Quattro Fil still seems to have more pronounced midrange detail, which is what I like. I suspected that HMS IC probably has richer, fuller sound but I'm glad to hear that Quattro Fil may have more apparent detail, which I think will suit my system better.
Actually, my system is all tubed as well. I really do like the detail of the Q-F a lot, but prefer the Valhalla (and HMS) over it for the reasons you cited in your post (also why I prefer the Siltech G5 and NBS Omega over all the Nordost cables). I think the Q-F's leanness comes more in the upper and mid-bass areas than the midrange. Since I tend to like a little darker overall tonal shading to my system, that's why I've ultimately sold the Quattro-Fil, but from your listening preference in your post it is clearly just what the doctor ordered. The HMS is not quite as focused or ultimately resolving as the Nordost, in my system (tends to not quite get the leading edges of transients as sharply as the Nordost, and image focus is not as precise), which as a listener primarily to classical music I actually find more convincing in some respects, but is an equally fine-sounding cable, just a slightly different flavor.
