You're right, cables do have an effect on conveying the energy in a recording. Thin silver wires, for example, tend to sound "faster" than thick multistrand copper.Sounds like it could be the recording or playback medium that's lacking in conveying the energy (what analog fans call Pace Rythm And Timing - PRaT).
Have you tried other recordings? What source are you listening to?

Follow Ups:
I'm using a Adcom CDP with a seperate DAC....I also use my computer and stream s/pdif out to my DAC.I have pretty much narrowed it down to my cables....because I can hear what I am looking for when I tried out Kimber selects....but I cant spend $1K + on a set of IC's.
Granted I dont have mega buck gear, but I feel it can deliver the goods....Dynaudio, Aragon 8008BB, Anthem Pre2L.

Hey, you have fine gear, clearly it can resolve well enough to hear the difference in cables.CDPs and digital sources in general can be pretty cold sounding. By that I mean not as emotionally involving as analog sources.
Since you can hear what you're missing with the Kimbers (damn nice cables, BTW), there's always the chance they're imparting something rather than revealing something, you know? All the Kimbers I've used certainly have a warmth and feeling to them.
In any event, whether it's the gear or the cables doesn't matter. You have what you have. One set of ICs works for you, another doesn't. Time to look at cables.
Yeah, $1k ICs aren't in my budget either.
Have you considered DIY? Definitely cheaper than $1k, though they can get pretty pricey too, depending on the components used. I went through a small fortune in cables myself before settling on a modified ChrisVH DIY Fine Silver design. I'll share the recipe wiht you if you like. They have the resolution, body, speed, and PRaT I like - even with the Adcom gear I used to use. The sound only got better when I upgraded the gear.
It is always important to us the same volume and recordings, ones you are very familar with, when compairing cable.I also am a big fan of OCC copper. I have some 21awg and some 22awg on the way...email me off line I can problably help you out.

Could you send me any details on your recipe for OCC copper. One of my favorites is 26 gauge Vampire CC copper in a quad braid with bullet plugs. Basically it's the same recipe from the Chimera labs site.I've tried 21 gauge before in a simple twisted pair and 3 wire braid like Kimber PBJ. I like the 26 gauge better. Seems to get better resolution of details without sacrificing bass.

Please do....share the recipe...I have been eyeing the VH web site along with HomeGrown Audio, Vampire and some others.....I have some WBT's at home as well as some XLR's already.
I'm looking at re-wiring my whole system....possibly including internal wire inside my Dynaudio's [sometimes i think crazy like that]
This is the pure teflon/Oyaide model using Chris' hyperflex tubing and cotton-insulated cryo'ed silver wire.

The yahoo.com address didn't work. Got an NDR when I tried to send to you.

I'd like to second what grailer is proposing. I have made the DIY silvers that Chris has designed. In fact I have a long run between my pre and amp that this cable really made a huge difference in. It was a two wire unshielded balanced run with Neutrik XLR's.This run really showed me how much the right cable in the right situation could make a difference in the sound. I tried everything from Blue Jeans Cable to DhLabs and Cardas cables both single ended and balanced, shielded and unshielded. Yet the two best sounding for this run were the lowest capacitance attemps, the Blue Jeans Belden 1800F, and then finally the DIY Silvers from Chris.
I have been thinking of using the new OCC 18gauge hookup wire in an interconnect with Chris's recipe. Hey it may work. Sure did for my speaker wires. Maybe a bit heavy for IC's though.
