Thank you, P.O.M.; you write that the Kimber combo gives more punch: I understand 'a more powerful bass', but is it also tight, detailed, articulate ?
'Cause that's what I'm looking for: I think 804s have enough bass for my tastes, but at the moment it's a bit... ehr... 'loose', not tight. So I wouldn't like to increase basses without increasing first their precision.
This could be bound to my amplification, as well: the VT60 may be not powerful enough to 'hold the reins' properly to the 804s, those current vampires.Thanks again.
Any other comments ?
not just by P.O.M., everybody's welcome !
Follow Ups:
Yes, the Kimber combo has more punch in the lower frequency than the CV-8 in my system. One of the reasons can be that the Kimber’s have a larger awg. (I have +300w solid state mono amplifiers) or that the Kimber’s are not so forward in the mid/high frequency on my N804 speakers.
My impression is that the CV-8 is slightly leaner and precise in the lower frequency than the Kimber’s but a bit too forward in the mid/high frequency on my N804 (with my electronics).
Are you satisfied with mid/high frequency in your 804s (with your electronics)?
If your electronics have a “dark” sound the CV-8 is worth a try.
I'm quite satisfied with my 804s: the highs are alright, the mids sound just a little bit 'metallic' but it's just a shade, the basses are dense but a little bit loose, not perfectly controlled, as I already wrote (all these observations are obviously referred to my set up). I guess this can be due to several factors:
- burn in not finished yet (they've been workin' 20h or so);
- power amp not powerful enough: they say 804s are vampires;
- soft feet inserted instead of spikes, as I'm waiting for Soundcare Sueprspikes;
- speaker cables to be upgraded: that's the reason of my post ! Now I use Supra 2.5If I succeed in obtaining a tighter bass without changing the overall sound, I'll be happy. I'm tryin' to obtain this by changing speaker cables and power amp. Concerning power amp, I'm thinking of a more powerful ARC or a McIntosh. Someone recommended ARC 100.2: I saw it is very highly thinked of in USA (4.9/5.0 on Audioreview.com, based on 20 reviews), but in Italy -where I live- it is not. Strange.
Hello,The mid range on these speakers can be “heaven or hell” depending on the rest of the system (system matching is the key). If you are using the mention Supra cables, both the AudioQuest CV-8 or the Kimber 8TC/8VS will be a real improvement (I have tried these Supra cables).
I have also heard that the 804s is a easier load for the amplifier than the N804 due to the different crossover filters.
You are also correct about the burn in of your new system, the sound will be improved over time.
I am also using Soundanchour speaker stands on my speakers, these are “worth the money” ( http://www.soundanchors.com/page34.html ), much better than the original spikes.
You bring good news, P.O.M. !
I was hoping (and actually almost sure) that speaker burn in and cables upgrade would significantly improve the sound; sincerely, I agree with you that both 8TC and CV8 will, but I want to 'start with the right foot' (literal and rough transaltion of an italian idiomatic phrase).I'm not providing to use Soundanchor spikes, but norwegian Soundcare Superspikes (www.soundcare.no): in Italy they're considered some kind of miracle to be inserted under the speakers, also due to their very high q/p ratio.
Anyway, I'll visit Soundanchor site and I may change my mind...thanks once more.
bye
danieleps: is there anybody else who wants to express an opinion ? It's hard to believe that nobody else heard 8TC and CV8. c'mon, don't be shy...
