Well, I just replaced a standard builder's recepticle with one of these Furutech FP-15A(cu) recepticles. I have my power amp plugged directly into one of the sockets and my power strip, which the rest of my gear is plugged into, is plugged into the other socket. It is the middle of the night, so I am not able to crank up the volume at all, but the sound seems to be very nice, with good deep bass. But things were already sounding pretty good beforehand.
So, is there any break in for recepticles? Will the sound change at all with time? Or is what I now hear, what I will get?

Follow Ups:
I just installed a Furutech FP-15A(cu) and the gold plated 20amp version on two of my dedicated lines yesterday. I also have the Oyaide Gx - one below the XXX I believe that my CDP is plugged into directly - have had that one for a few months. With the insertion of the new Furu's the energy of my stereo seems to have gone up a couple notches, a bit higher clarity and detail that was there before but not as pronounced. I liked the mellow nature of my system before so the jury is still out whether I will need to make some changes but I will let things be for a month, I do like the higher level (perseption) of detail. I find I don't have to turn it up as much as before, but its only been 24 hours so this may mellow. All in all for a couple hundred bucks, I would say its like a major component upgrade at this point. Now onto some serious power chords...
good listening.

I immediately noticed very worthwhile improvements in transparency, vividness and detail. I was already using the Chris VH flavor 2 cords with FI-11cu/FI-11ag connectors. If the receptacles improve as much as the pc's, I'm gonna be a very happy man.....but they sure sound great right now (Day 1).
I just can't get over the radical improvements that upgrading pc's/receptacles makes. Really kicking myself I didn't address this earlier.
Absolutely the best bang for buck improvement you can make to your system IMO.

Paul,I noticed in your system details that your are using bi-wired MI-2 cables. Obviously, you must like them, but could you tell me about how they compare to other speaker cables you have tried?
Also, how much better were they bi-wired vs single run?
Of most interest to me is the bass reproduction, since my Legacys go down to about 22hz, and I already believe the Goertz are great in the mids and highs.
The reason I ask is that I am wondering about changing my speaker cables on my main system:
Legacy Audio Signature IIs
power amp is Sherbourn 5/1500A which is five mono 200wpc
Sony DA4ES as pre/pro
RCA HDDVD player as CD/movie player
Speltz anti-ICs between Sony and the power ampMy current speaker cables are a rather old set of Tara Labs RSC Prime bi-wire. These have been pretty good overall, but I wonder if the MI-2 bi-wire might offer better sound. I do have a single run of MI-2(not bi-wire) installed to my center channel speaker, and it sounds really good.
I also e-mailed you. Hope that is OK.
I'm not going to be able to help much here, since I've not really experimented much with speaker cables.
I bought the Goertz because it had some respectable feedback regarding it's sonics, and it had a sensible design and technical rational that appealed to be me. I also needed fairly long runs and the Goertz was reasonably priced (I prefer to run short interconnects and place the electronics to the side rather than plunk between the speakers - where bulging objects tend to interfere with sonics).
I haven't experimented with a single wire run either - my cables came as a dedicated biwire set i.e. both cables terminated to a single spade at the amplifier end.Prior to buying the Goertz and re-arranging my system (electronics to side etc) I briefly auditioned some Harmonic tech Pro 9 bi-wire cables against my then current Straightwire Maestro bi-wires. The former were clearly better and if I'd had the $'s I might have sprung for the Pro 9's - just too expensive for me in the runs I was contemplating.
FWIW, if I replaced the Goertz cables it would be some DIY design. Frankly, while all cables sound different to some degree, I don't think spending big bucks on cables is a path to audio nirvana. I like the Goertz because they don't do anything obviously wrong and allow the essential neutrality of my speakers to shine through without any spritzing up or spotlighting effects. I can't comment on the bottom octave since my speakers start rolling off in the mid forties. Are they the ultimate in transparency? Probably not. I bet the Pro 9's (and others) would be better in this respect, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. I'm not going to be dropping multi $K's on speaker cables anytime soon!
In any case, the pc/receptacle changes I've made recently eclipse the differences in speaker cables that I've experimented with - and cost 'peanuts' by comparison. As always, YMMV.

... because they sounded so bad I was ready to put back the no-names they had replaced. And then, all of a sudden, they sounded marvelous. Couldn't get over it.
But after hearing a direct comparison in a friend's system between the $140 Wattgates and the $36 Porter Ports, I sure wish I had bought the latter.

in my experience everything needs a break-in, incl receptacles.i have the same outlet & right out of the box it sounds better than the Oyaide SWO-XXX due to the bass output. there's zero HF issues with it initially.
the furu will mellow, the highs will come out and imaging will improve in a week or 2. Try furu male plugs with your gear...
Hey thanks Matt,Nice to hear the sound may improve a bit over time. The only upgraded power cable/plug I am currently using is a Iron Lung Jellyfish that connects the Sherbourn amp to the new Furutech. The Jellyfish is a very inexpensive 14awg PC that I picked up as an experiment to find out if I could hear a difference with aftermarket PCs. I did immediately think there was an improvement over the stock 18awg cord.
I just yesterday read some posts about cutting off the plug on stock power cords and replacing them with Furutech or other quality plugs. That may be my next tweak.

I have 2 of them. they were also my 1st foray into aftermarket cables. If you hear & like the difference they make, its time to make some new power cables...after the Holidays!i still use both jellyfish from time to time - its kinda weird though.
If i'm powering my home computer with one, the burned cd's i make have more signal (louder) coming out the right channel than the left...and the CD-R sounds really closed in with muffled bass. i don't have a continuity issue with the cable, its just an attribute that stands out now that i have better cables to compare to.The Iron Lung Jellyfish are good starter cables, but you're only hearing a small amount of the benefits that the good stuff offers.
i assemble my own pc's & think this a great way to start off. You learn a bit and save a bit more. A 6' length of bulk DH Labs AC cable or C. Venhaus Flavor cable will set you back $50 or less. The Furu FI-11M male + FI-11Ag female plug is a GREAT combo and costs $75. In my experience, a cable such as this costing only $125 or so will run with the best cables avail & last a lifetime. And, i think there's synergy with using same brand plugs and wall outlet - i just found this out after assembling an Oyaide system.
a very interesting way to proceed might be to cut off the stock male plug of the Jellyfish and install a Furu Fi-11M - i'd bet you'll be quite surprised at the result. this would also be a good primer to illuminate how crucial the plugs are versus the cable itself, especially the male plug. If you hear a benefit, save up and buy the female plug later on. Then, after a few more months toss out the cable and step up to DH Labs or CV or whoever. cable in bulk is quite affordable, its the male & female plugs that get pricey.
besides, due to the low cost of the jellyfish you ain't gonna be able to sell them. at some point i'll end up giving my pair away.
true story: I called TAD & purchased the 2nd set of Jellyfish about 4 minutes after plugging in the 1st. I had never heard a good cable before, and the difference between the stock cord i was using & the Jellyfish was undeniable...without ANY burn-in. Fortunatly & unfortunatly, there's a whole 'nother world of sound & fun available once you go beyond the Iron Lung Jellyfish - it just costs $.
if you're looking at speaker cables & IC's, check out paul speltz's products & Mapleshade. lots of folks here like the Blue Jeans cables too, but i stay away from normal Belden wire based cables...my Heartland cables with eichmann's are SO boring and closed in. In this day & age, you can get funky & well engineered stuff for only a bit more $ than the quality you can get at Radio Shack, Circuit City or Home Depot.
Friends do NOT let friends Monster Cable (or MP3 for that matter)
Well, I got the Furu male plug you mentioned plus the F11-Ag EIC connector. I installed them on the ends of the Jellyfish. I connected this cable to the 5-channel power amp(200wpc).I have only listened to CDs so far, but can't really say I notice a big difference yet. Maybe a little extra in the really deep bass. I'll give it some time. I'll be watching a movie tonight.
Another issue is that my current pre-pro is my Sony DA4ES receiver, which, first of all, is certainly not state-of-the-art, and secondly is only connected via its original 18awg power cord.
I think my next move will be to replace the Jellyfish cord with one of those big 10awg cords you mentioned.

Hey Matt,Thanks for all the info and advice!
I actually have one set of Speltz anti-ICs, and boy they seem fabulous to me, esp. at the price. I want to get some more soon.
The Speltz replaced some Blue Jeans Belden ICs, and there is no comparison.

Make sure to spend the $ and get the Anti-IC's with Eichmann's if you purchase another set.i've heard that paul is making a set of silver IC's now too. just had my first 'silver' experience with a set of Promitheus Audio silver IC's ($60) and i'm digging silver. having a little copper & silver in the signal chain is a good thing IMO.
I've not used any other cables that work quite so well between my TVC and amp as the Anti-IC's w/eichmann's.
since you have nice IC's its REALLY time to upgrade from the Jellyfish. you won't realize the benefits of the Anti-IC's until you do. Spend $30 on a Furu fi-11m male plug and stick it on a Jellyfish, it'll be a pleasant surprise.
