Many things, items, are called by trade names. How many non electricians on this forum would know what type NM cable is?
In my area house wiremen call it rope.

NEC 2005 334.2 Definitions. Page 70-178"Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable. A factory assembly of two or more insulated conductors enclosed within an overall nonmatallic jacket."
"Type NM. Insulated conductors enclosed within an overall nonmetallic jacket."
"Type NMS. Insulated power or control conductors with signal, data, and communication conductors within an overall nonmetallic jacket."

I don't know. More than before.
So what are you trying to say? Are you suggesting that just because most people don't know that Romex is merely a brand name, that their ignorance should be catered to? What is the point of that?

You mean not knowing the difference between Type NM cable and type NMS cable? Maybe you should just call it romex. If the guys on this forum want to call it romex that's fine with me. Hell I call it romex...
I call my side cutters, "Kleins".
Adjustable wrench, "Crescent wrench".Tougue and grove pliers, "Channellocks"
Portable band saw, "Porta band saw"
Reciprocating saw, "Sawzall"
Flexible metal conduit, "GF" "Greenfield"

Yap, I guess I am just ignorant.
But if that's what you want to do, fine. It appears your point is that ignorance is good. Learning is bad. We should all just be like every other ignorant person. We'll call all MP3 players "iPods."
We'll call all silver discs "CDs."
We'll call all speakers "Bose."
We'll call all audio cables "Monster."
And no one will have a problem with this, right?

Well, the manufacturer calls it "NM-B Nonmetallic-Sheathed" cable. I guess you don't know the difference either. Maybe you should stop this stupid argument now.

And here I thought it was all about you calling the members on this forum ignorant for calling Romex, Romex.
> > Is that what this discussion has been...... < <Yes, and I still don't know why you started it.

Two things, and then I'm done.
First: it seems you don't know what the word "ignorant" means. "Ignorant" means "lacking knowledge or education." Someone who does not know that Romex is a brand name, not a cable type, is ignorant. Someone who does not know what the "B" in "NM-B" means, as I did not until you explained it, is ignorant.
Ignorance, unlike stupidity, is a condition that can be corrected by gaining knowledge or education. Ignorant people can learn. Stupid people think that "ignorant" is a synonym for "stupid." In my opinion, education and sharing of knowledge are the primary purpose of this forum, so it is a place where ignorance is shed and knowledge is gained. Why do you have a problem with that?
Second:
> > for calling Romex, Romex. < <
Today I bought a roll of 14/2 NM-B. Nowhere on the package did it say "Romex." It said "Diamond Handiwire." So why should I call it Romex? Do you think the company that made it wants it to be called by a competitor's brand name?

Hi.A popular tradename of NM type building wires for decades, manufactured by Rome Cable Corp in NY. Since its closed-down some years back, this brandname is taken over by Southwire in Georgia.
Like Hoover vacuum cleaners, being a houehold name, Romex is also a
word-of-the-mouth name for electrical installers in U.S.But why Romex & the like building wires? Please don't tell me you use it as speaker cables. They sound crap!
Hi.This type of 'house wires' (the electrical trades call such cables used in industrial & domestic premises) is short for: Nonmetallic Sheathed Wet Underground cable. You should not call it anything else.
All the wiring were installed EXPOSED under the wooden main floor in my house basement is NMWU since day one when the house was built.
I got the feeling it is somewhat overkilling as NMD90 (nometallic
sheathed dry 90C) should be OK. Of cousre, I don't mind. How a wire or cable called officially always governs its desingated applications. Not a random name one can call whatever.
Like CAT5e/CAT6 is a LAN (local networking cable) is designated for data & video signal transfer. Of course, msny still use them for audio.
