It has this thingie, looks like two thick plastic strings glued together, it appears to be connected somehow to two flat metal plates. Anyway the instruction manual has all these lightening bolt pictures and a nice picture of a house with an antenna. In short the can opener does not work, and what do I do with that string thing?

Geeze, you mechanical injuneers..guess we eeeelectical injuneers gotta splain everthing??Hold onta that string assembly thing by the molded handle provided, and swing it around your head as fast as you can..
When it has sufficient velocity, and it's direction is correct, release the handle, allowing the built up kinetic energy (1/2 mv 2 ) to release upon contact with the container to be opened (hereby referred to as IFC , or I nsolent F ood C ontainer). If the opener device is used correctly, one or two tries will suffice. Note that IFC 's constructed using LDC material ( L ow D ielectric C oefficient material...glass), are a bit more difficult to extricate the contents of, without excessive product overspray, this event commonly referred to as C oefficient R elated A nisotropic P rocess, with the associated cleanup procedure and product disposal known as AMF . I have yet to master the techniques required for release of product contained within IFC 's made of LDC , however, do note that on occasion, LDC IFC 's of sufficient mass ( H igh M ass F raction)( HMF 's)are capable of deflecting the OOI ( O pener O f I nterest) into an " O rthogonal H i- S peed H igh I mpact T rajectory.
Keep plenty of sheetrock and spackle available, as there is a learning curve.
Oh, final note..This is a one man operation..
